I have huskies and my male dogs are always after my female even when she isn't in heat. They start mounting her and once last year one actually raped her, for lack of better term, and she wasn't in heat yet. A few weeks/month later she finally did come in heat and she did in fact breed with the males several several times. She ended up not getting pregnant that year. She is around 5 years old and they are about 1 1/2 years old so I am wondering did that "rape" have anything to do with it and most importantly IS IT OK FOR THE MALES TO MOUNT THE FEMALES BEFORE THEY COME IN HEAT OR SHOULD I SEPARATE THEM EACH TIME OR KEEP THEM APART (they usually are just when i let them out to play). The female usually will block the male, I know this, but he made it happen that once. They are AKC Siberian Huskies and my family breeds them for shows/competitors.

I know that rape doesn't apply to dogs, that is what I meant by lack of a better term, I don't know what you would call it if a male mounts a female and locks with her while she is NOT in heat, and is not ready or wants it yet. Like I said usually she will block him until she comes into heat. They are usually kept separate but I let them out once in a while to run. They are not overbred either she has only had puppies once and no one is related. I only want serious helpful answers. To Jennifer..it is fine to ask questions thats how you learn I just want to know if this harmed her if it did, I will keep her and her mate separate until it is time for them to breed. ....Thank you charlotte.

hi charlotte
usually i would say no a dog cant get raped, but a few weeks ago i groomed a dog who is spayed and her owners said she was raped, i laughed it off until i bathed her
her vulva was totally bruised, and she was leaking discharge, so i beleive that yes they can get raped, and i would say you have to keep them seperate if your males are too sexual because she can get injured
good luck

The word rape has definite connotations to people that do not apply to dogs. It implies an emotional impact on the victim that just doesn't work with the dog's eye view of life.
The real question you seem to be asking, is, is it OK for the males to mount the female when she is not in heat. The answer is yes, this normal. It is a dominance issue for the most part. Unless the male actually penetrates and locks with the female, it is not even sexual.
However, you say the female was mated by the multiple males several times last year. If you are raising AKC dogs and you are not keeping the female separated from a parade of male dogs, then you cannot prove lineage. The female can be mated to any number of males and father a litter sired by several different fathers at the same time. This means you cannot ethically register your puppies without lying on the AKC registration. Not only that, but suppose by some accident you actually got a hot prospect for the show ring, you have no idea who the father is to try to reproduce this outstanding pairing. What a waste of time! This is very bad breeding practice and shows a remarkable lack of interest in ethical practice.
It is imperative that you keep the females separated from the males during heat cycles and use only controlled breeding practices if you want to go anywhere in the dog breeding world.
Otherwise you're just another puppy mill.

Sometimes the mounting is a sign of dominance before the females come into heat. Male dogs can definetely take over a female. They are larger and heavier.
Good Luck,

I would not call it rape they dont know what rape is its just natural for them to do that is all my male cat does that to my female cat even when she is not in heat its just natural animal behaviour is all it is. It wont hurt her to get some while she is in heat ive never heard of that doing anything before but if your worried then keep them seperaded during that time its all you can really do.

rape means it's against someones will. she could get away if she really wanted to. i don't think it will hurt her to be mounted while not in heat, there just won't be a chance of puppies. honestly, it sounds like they may be a little overbred, leading to this hyperactivity. Neutering the boys will solve the problem, but not if you are breeding them.
