My understanding was that it was not forbidden so much as considered rude.

It is more an Arabic thing than a Muslim one.
It is not forbidden, but in Arab culture (and others, eg Thailand) it is simply considered to be rude to sit in a way that shows other people the soles of your feet.

I'm not Muslim and this is the first I've heard of it, but I can take a pretty good stab at it I think; I bet it stems from an old phrase that they turned into a custom, "show them the soles of your feet" means you are walking away from them, forever.
It's sort of an insulting to the person who has to see them.

for your information, that is totally FALSE. muslims are allowed to show the soles of their feet just like other human beings.
p/s where you get that kind of silly information?

I think I do know a little bit about the religion cuz i practice it, but I havent heard of such a thing in islam.
Maybe you are confusing it with some other cultural practice in a particular country, maybe muslim country?

I think it's an insult.
Showing the bottom of your foot, is kinda like flipping someone the bird.
I'm not sure if that's the muslim culture or not, though.
NOPE, IT'S THAILAND ! (scroll down a little)

It sounds like what is said in the Bible when Jesus said that if you are not welcome in a town or village, then shake the dust from your sandals and go on your way.
