At the time it was instituted the fish mongers where having a terrible time selling fish so the Pope decided to start this new "law".

This is simply a religous ritual with no Biblical basis. Lent and Advent are nither one mentioned in the Bible, so the accompanying acts that people perform during these times are strictly tradition.

Catholics refrain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of Jesus' sacrifice on Good Friday and also as a way to unite ourselves with the poor. The rich can go to the market and buy red meat. The poor had to rely on fishing to put protein on the table. By eating fish on Friday and doing acts of self-sacrifice, we remind ourselves of the gifts that God has given us.

The rule was NOT overturned by the last Pope.

The theory of the fish mongers sounds like it came from some very cynical person.

refraining from meat on Fridays is not found in the Bible, but other examples of self-sacrifice can be found. Yes, Lent and Advent are man made traditions, but unlike the traditions of the Pharisees, these traditions bring us closer to God, not contradict any of His commandments.

Actually Catholics orignally stopped eating meat on fridays because at the time there was a minor famine happening. It was sort of a tradition that hung around even after the meat shortages ended. It isn't a sin to eat meat on any friday, Good friday included. It doesn't exist in the bible because it isn't ever given of a command not to eat meat. You are free to eat meat whenever you please.

i became instructed, by ability of a Catholic Priest, the custom of no longer eating meat on Fridays became started because of the fact a protracted time in the past fishermen weren't making a marvelous type of money. to help them out the monks, on the time, declared each Friday instead of meat, fish would desire to be eaten. besides i think you could eat meat whenever you prefer, biblical verses to back it up: Romans 14:2 -5, 6

That was a man made law that most Christians choose to go by. Our last Pope had over turned that law and now it is OK to eat meat on Fridays . What you r question should be what about all those lost souls that are in purgatory for eating meat on Friday before it was over ridden.

Both the answers are correct. However, it is not a huge sin to eat meat on Good Friday. I once asked a Catholic priest about it, and he confirmed that we won't go to hell if we eat meat on Good Friday. In other words, it's simply a suggestion.
