It all depends on weather your traveling with kids that are in school or adults. With no kids i think the best time is in February, you will leave new york where the weather is cold and after you pass by north and south Carolina you will have warm weather and by the time you get to Miami it hot all the way to los angeles, i know that because i went in February from New Jersey, and by the way its approximately 36 hour drive, if you have at least 2 drivers, my husband would drive 3 hours then rest while i drive 3 hours,

Best time of the year is May to September. Weather is pretty stable in most of the country at that time. It may get a little warm in the summer months, but you don't have to worry about winter weather at least not yet.

I agree I like the second or third week September. The brutal heat is gone from the deserts, snow hasn't hit the Rockies yet if you chose to go through Denver and tornado season is pretty much over if you plan to go through OKC.
In addittion motel rates are down a bit and some of the popular spots - Grand Canyon- are experiencing fewer visitors.

The last week in May or September.
Do you or any co-travellers have an allergy to pollen?
That could be a deciding factor!
Do you like the change of color in leaves? Pick the fall.

Best time is right after kids go back to school, less families taking vacations and nice fall weather.

Started across the north in June, and stayed north the whole trip...but watch the weather anyway..seems like it has changed and become more unpredictable ....

Probably early-to-mid fall, or late spring to early summer.

You want to avoid extreme weather conditions, both hot and cold.
