I'm taking a road trip this summer up the CA coast into Oregon and Washington, but I can't decide what Jeep I want to buy to take on the trip. It's either a TJ or XJ. You tell me what you would pick, but then could you give me some ideas on what mods to put on the jeep you chose.

OK. It will just be me and one other person, one bag each, and minimum camping gear. I considered a kargo master congo cage with a bushman rack (quadratec.com) to put on the TJ.... if that's what I plan to buy. I have driven for a couple hundred miles in a TJ rag top, and it's noisy, but that really isnt a factor for me. It will be a month long trip due to the fact we will be taking backroads most of the way......or when I feel like it LOL!!!!

I have both an xj and a new tj.While both are very good and dependable trucks.I would have to say if you are planning a road trip. You would want to buy the xj.The tj's are fun.But can be a bit noisy on the interstate and the seats aren't very comfortable for long trips. The xj has more room and more comfortable seats.Economy wise you are looking at the same basic fuel costs. Both of my boys are 4.0's and although the xj is heavier it gets the same mpg has my tj does.

It depends on how many people and how much luggage you are taking. If it was me I would take the XJ. My buddy has a TJ and it is deafening on the highway. It is not a vehicle that I would want to go on a road trip with. The XJ is going to be a lot quieter and more comfortable. Also, the TJ will give you a smoother ride since you are traveling mostly on the road.

I just took my 2004 TJ from Washington State to Winston Oregon which is about 119 miles from the California Border. It took us about 8 hours and $200 just in gas to get there. A TJ will only get about 15 miles per gallon but It was me, my man, my daughter. An XJ would have been more comfortable.

i have a TJ with a soft top. MURDER on the highway after a few hours. all the noise. if you have a hard top its ok, but the TJ still isnt great on road trips cuz it has a 15 gallon tank and doesnt get very good gas mileage. its as aerodynamic as a shoe box. and i dont have cruise control either. most dont. i would say the XJ because its a quiet ride, larger fuel tank and probably has criuse. plus you can fit more gear in the XJ for the trip.
have fun!!

The biggest deciding factor should be how much stuff and do you want to go topless? If you have a lot of stuff or people to take the XJ has more room. If you want the top off and not much stuff or people then the TJ is the choice.
Then modify it how you want.

that gut is right if you do not plan on taking much stuff. Like just 2 suitcases and one other person. This will be most of your room unless you get and additional storage rack. the tj would be fun. otherwise xj also cool mods are lift, bigger tires, aftermarket wheels, fog lights, try quadratec it is everything jeep.

An overland model Grand Cherokee would be the best bet for a road trip and off roading...it would require no modifications whatsoever. If that is too expensive consider an older Grand Cherokee with the orvis package.
