I am thinking about joining the Army, I would like to know what are my chances of being sent to Iraq. I actually want to go and help out. Rather than being trained and then stationed here or elsewhere in a non combat situation(in Germany, Japan, South Korea for example), I want to be put in the middle of the action.

I would like to know (if you know how)what would best be my chances of being deployed to Iraq? Do i need to join a certain branch of military, a certain this and that and something else? I know that not everyone gets sent there. how does the military choose and decide who to sent and who not to?

please only geniune responses! thank you.

Enlist into a combat arms MOS - infantry should get you to Iraq pretty quickly. Also, when they have you fill out your "dream sheet" (they may have changed the name, but it's your preferences for where you want to be stationed), pick duty stations with big, well-known units that deploy a lot. Ft Campbell (101st Airborne) and Ft Bragg (82nd Airborne) will pretty much guarantee you a deployment. You can also ask around if you know anyone already in (or ask your recruiter) to try to find out which units are supposed to deploy soon, and ask to go there. Like someone else said, at MEPS they can probably help put you in a unit that's deploying soon.

Thanks for actually wanting to go to Iraq. I see people on here all the time wanting to know how to get out of a deployment, and it pisses me off. My husband is about to leave for Iraq for the 3rd time - I don't want to see people whining about having to go for the 1st or 2nd time.

All services deploy to Iraq. Yes the Army and Marines have a greater chance. The Navy Special Forces and Seabees deploy regularly. All other jobs in the Navy have a chance of deploying in an TAD type status to help with the support rolls. Both my 2 oldest sons joined the Navy, my oldest has been deployed on a ship to the Persian Gulf - neither have been on the ground in Iraq or Afganistan. I applaud your thinking of joining - the war is just and we truely need to be there.

Join the Army or Marines in a combat unit, and you are almost guaranteed deployment to Iraq. You can check with your recruitment office for the branch you are considering joining and they may be able to provide you the best direction to insure being in a unit that has the potential to be assigned to Iraq. Joining the Air Force or Navy might lessen your chances.

Your chances are very great regardless of the job you choose. Any of the direct combat MOS's such as Infantry, armor, artillery, etc. Also one of the most sought after MOS's in Iraq is 88M10 Heavy Wheel Vehicle Operator. These guys are the back bone of the Military. Without them everyones job becomes very difficult. These guys are the supply lines. I was an 88M10 in Desert Storm, I was always getting shot. If that is your desire that is where I would recommend you go, plus you get to operate some very cool and big trucks.

It doesn't matter what job you choose, if you join the marines or the army, you are going! If you join the Army, you will probably go Iraq about 6 to 12 months after you get out of basic. E-mail me, I'm a recruiter!

Theres a good cahnce either way but heres the quick route: (BTW Thank you for not being a pus*y and doing something to help in this noble war effort)

* Join combat arms, this means infantry, artillery, armor, speciual forces, ranger etc.

*You can show that you want to go to Iraq and they will usually send you.

*They will ask where you want to be stationed at MEPS when you process, tell them you want to go to Iraq and play int he sandbox and they will have absolutely NO problem with that.
Good luck and god's speed.

the chances are extremely extremely high that you will be deployed to Iraq. remember, when you join the military you are always taking a chance you will be sent to a combat zone. if that is not something you are comfortable with, then don't join. especially the army. if that's something you want, then you couldn't pick a better time to join.

Army is a good bet. They deploy for 12 months at a time, and Infantry will get you a close look at what you are wanting. They are rotated through based on the needs of the army.

Depends on what MOS you get. You can enter into contract for specific occupational fields. For example, my cousin is in the Air Force, he does helicopter maintenance and he went to Iraq once for 6 months and never even heard a shot get fired. I was Marine infantry and spent 18 months there and shot my weapon often.
