I have this friend who's got dogs and they're newspaper trained. Every Sunday she goes driving around at night to find a Newspaper stand in the street *You know those little machines by the curb* Well, she pays for one but takes more than one. She'd grab either the whole stack like 5-6. I'd tell her you're only suppose to take one. But her excuse is it's 9pm and if nobody takes them the Newspaper people will recycle them anyways to refill it with Mondays paper. But I'm just curious is it right to take more than one Newspaper from those stands ? Even if she's right and they throw them out or recycle the old leftover papers. You'd paid for one then she should only get one ... Right ?? What's your opinions about this ? Please, reply ! ( ' u ' )

Ok, I spoke to her about this and she said what about *FREE* Newspapers ? We go to this Filipino SuperMarket that has like 12 Newspaper stands with *FREE* Filipino-American Newspapers. She wants to know if it's wrong to take a bunch of the *FREE* Newspaper ? And again her excuse is they're gonna change it the next day with updated Newspaper and trash the leftovers so why not help them by taking them.

it is definitely illegal and is a misdemeanor offense and they can impose charges on the person that is caught with fines of up to 500$ along with criminal mischief charges and larceny.
i have known newspaper companies to hire people to drive around and watch people take papers and then report them to police with video surveillance. so be careful.

It's stealing even if it's done right before 'closing' time.

Why doesn't she ask a couple neighbors to save their old newspapers for her? They might actually like it when they don't have to carry as much paper to the recycle center, but if she'll pick it up (weekly, biweekly, monthly, whatever) at the door. Let the word go around and she'll have more paper than she can handle.

It just makes me laugh on how in a society where everyone wants to get a lot for practically nothing, they have not come up with a better invention for the newspaper stands that only dispense one, rather than giving people the chance to take them all if they wanted. It is still implimenting the "honor system", but I guess it is more of the guilt is on her if she takes more than what she paid for. I know if she gets caught, they really wouldn't do much about it.

Your friend may try to justify it, but it IS stealing and I think it is wrong. I noticed when I got a paper last time that they had put stickers on the machines explaining it is wrong to take more than one paper and you can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It's too bad that some people have no integrity.
I think you are right to be offended ! Shame on her!
Good point to raise!

Well, if everyone had her attitude, all the papers would be gone by 10 AM! It is wrong. She paid for one, so should only take one. She wouldn't go to a newsstand and do that so why is it OK with a machine? She knows it's wrong and is trying to rationalize her way out of guilt. But she is still wrong.

When I had a dog and a bird, I tended to take 2. Never a whole stack though, that's just wrong.

OMG u guys all have very large sticks up your butt. As long as she does not take all the papers i don't see the problem. but she should leave like two for the homeless guy who is thinking about using anewspaper as a blanket. lets be honest anyway who goes out to buy the paper at 9 at night anyway? no one but highschool kids who have a current events article due the next day in economics class.

It is wrong. She is a cheap theif. She has dogs, she needs to pay for their up keep and buy those doggy doo bags (or whatever they are called). The newspaper company is not responsible for her dogs doo.

Since when is it right to steal? You pay for one, you take one. Want more than one? Pay for them.
