Whatever you do, do NOT take them to a middle school and sell them to the children.

Try 'crushing' the pills and mixing them with some 'icky fluid' like 'oil' or 'dirty grease' and then throwing them into the trash. Technically, you are supposed to 'flush them' down the toilet or sink, but these days you don't know 'where' that is going to 'come out' or what those 'drugs' could do to the 'beings' in that water, so I'd say 'mess up the drugs' to make them UNATTRACTIVE and INEDIBLE and put them in a 'tight plastic bag' into the garbage.

I agree with other answers. I flush my old meds. Just don't flush the container they came in. I know, foolish remark, but to be fair to me, I have done some plumbing work in my life and you would be amazed what some people will try to flush.
If you do as we have suggested, it will take a pretty hard addict to get any use out of what's left of the meds in a few minutes.

I usually keep them around until i know for sure that they are expired but since there are little ones around i try to flush them in the toilet or dispose of them in the medical waste receptacles at my therapist's office.

i would recommend that you take them to your local pharmacy and hand them in they can dispose of them safely and in a proper way! i wouldn't flush them down the toilet if i were you you don't know what will be happening in your system they could react! take them to a pharmacy or maybe your doctor failing that your local hospital should be able to get rid of them xx
