Smiles are never wasted.

Someone might not return it if they had serious trouble of their own, in which case, they might need your smile.

Yes, it does annoy me. I notice this a lot on the train--especially in the morning. If I happen to look up from the paper I'm reading and see someone staring at me, I'll smile. These people NEVER smile back. Happens at least a few times per week. You'd think their face might crack, you know? I love smiling at people--makes me feel good. How, if you see someone smiling specifically at you, could you NOT smile back? V v v rude!

I used to be annoyed when I was younger. I have come to learn when a person don't smile back it has nothing to do with you. You have no way of knowing what is in the mind others. It is a reflection on them if they meet kindness with rudeness.

Yes! It makes me very pessimistic towards the world. i go out of my way to smile at someone and they either ignore it or make a menacing face. And when someone smiles at me and I notice, I smile back. It's very bad manner, I think. And very insensitive.
I understand about the half smile. I do that too. My heart has maybe hardened from all of my wasted smiles.

yes it annoys me, but I do not think it is a smile wasted. I just consider the person it was directed to is rude for not acknowledging it.

I don't get too insulted when people don't smile back because I don't know what's going on in their life. Maybe a family member was in a car accident, their dog got sick, they got fired etc etc. I try not to take things too personally and make assumptions....

It's very insulting and embarrassing for the person who smile and don't get smiled back. It's like extending to shake someone's hand and they don't want to. It makes me weary of smiling too.

That just happened to me! I have begun to only give half smiles too. People are *so* rude nowadays. I hate having to bring myself down and not be polite cuz of them.
