We (me & my hubby) always make sure there's a coffe maker in the room. Nothing worse then having to get dressed and go out of the room for your 1st cup of coffee. Second, a fridge. Just a small one is fine, but not having one is a pain. Also, I agree with the other person about decent soap, shampoos, although it's not a priority for me, I bring my own. But it does show the level of standards the place has. The best I've found in a moderately priced hotel is Clubhouse Suites, with Hampton coming in second. Hampton, we like, because they have a 100% satisfaction guarentee, or you don't pay. We love this because you never know when you're booking over the phone, regardless of how good the reputation, what you'll run into. We're happy 98% of the time with Hampton, but we've been on roadtrips where we end up in a room where the air doesn't work, one time we booked the bridal suite to get the jacuzzi, thinking it would be great because we had been driving for 2 days straight and, low and behold, it didn't work! Sometimes you run into a not so clean room, although the 10 times before when you stayed it was immaculate...it happens. We also like a place that includes a continental breakfast. It's usually fruits, cerals, bagels, things like that but good if you want to grab something quick and get on the road.
But, I'd have to say the coffee maker is the 1 non-negotiable item when choosing a hotel/motel...good luck and have a great time!

Depends on where I'm staying...some places I wouldn't even expect to find a bathroom or a desk.

If it's an expensive hotel and I'm on a business trip, I'd expect toiletries in the bathroom, fluffy towels, a hairdryer, alarm clock (with a radio) by the bed, safe deposit box in the room and an iron & board.

If I'm backpacking and staying in cheap places, I'm just grateful for a clean bed and a door that locks. I take everything else that I really need. .

I do a lot of international travel and often have to book a hotel room. I don't expect to live in a luxury suite but I do expect a clean set of linen, the floor to be cleaned, the neighbours to be doing the same as you do, ( sleeping not partying,) and a TV, so in watching some of the local news, I feel I am feeling that I am there. It's all pretty boring really. I don't like hotel rooms. One sleeps better in their own bed.

If your hotel room has bed, bathroom, desk & cupboard that means it' in a decent category, one would expect to be supplied with hair-dryer, shampoo, soap, bath foam in a mini bottle, writing material, sewing kit, TV. phone, maybe a mini fridge too filled with drinks, some nuts, etc. (which you have to pay for) possibly a bible too. First class hotels these days often have on line connection as well.

A decent TV it doesn't take a degree in physics to drive. Tea/coffee/biscuits stuff. A couple of glasses and a corkscrew for the bottle of wine you have bought. And lastly a cheap minibar (that bit was a joke by the way, there is more likelyhood of the tooth fairy than a cheap minibar).

Expect - CLEAN room, fresh washed bedding and more than just the micro towel , good water pressure in shower . . .(cupboard ?)
One place had the option of high quality bath sheets for a deposit (due to thieves) but you had your choice of keeping it for a souvenir or returning it for the deposit . . . That was great !
Hope - Microwave & small fridge , icemaker nearby ,
wireless internet ,

Want but never found - QUIET air conditioner in summer.

There's usually a bible, stationary with pen, phone book, pamphlets of what there is to do around the area (this should all be around the desk area), a tv with a remote, soap and shampoo, towels....and if you're really lucky complimentary coffee/juice/mints.

A clean room!! You wouldn't believe all the germs in the room, especially the rug!!! A t.v. is usually in the room and now most hotels have small fridges in the room and coffee makers!! All good :))
