if there are any animal resuces in your area they sometimes set up "cur" runs that they transport animals if they are your own cats they may request or you may offer a donation to the rescue.

I guess it depends on how you are getting there.
If you are flying, I would fly them with you. Some airlines you can pay like $85 to have your kitties be your carry-on. I would never put my kitties in the storage or cargo area, wherever they go.
If you are driving, talk to your vet about some sort of mild sedative. Don't feed them 12 hours before you leave and no water 4-6 hours before you leave. Try to make it in one trip too. Also, save some of their used litter when you give them a litter box in your new house. The smell will be familiar and they shouldn't have a problem using it.

My wife and I rented an SUV and drove our cats from Washington state to Minnesota. They meowed for only about 15-20 minutes at the beginning of the day, and then calmed down. They slept most of the time. If you look on the internet, you should be able to find pet-friendly motels on your way.

That really isn't that far to drive with a cat. You could do it in one day, especially if you switch drivers. We drove from WI to Florida with our cat - took him on vacation with us in our RV. We also took him to South Dakota the next year.
Our other cat, however, would have to be lightly sedated for the trip. The vet could give you prescription sedatives if you would need those. I would just do the drive.

Some Mailing services , such as the Postal Service have live animal transportation. I would call around for the best rate.

The safest way (and most cost efficient) would be to put each in his own pet crate in the back seat, and travel by car

well, if your are driving, put them in a cat carrier and drive. if you aren' t or somebody else, then i don't think that there is a way to transport them without an expensive price.
