I did buy generic dry cat food just for the week. He doesn't seem to like it much. Could he be allergic to it? He is healthy, neutered, and up to date on shots. He is a domestic longhair and he sheds a lot. Also, he does have fleas, I just put on a new collar two days ago. Around his tail there is hairloss along with what looks like a rash... Should i bring him to the vet or change his cat food or is it the new flea collar??

Any of them. Cats can have allergic reactions in many different ways. Your cat may also have ringworm. Ringworm is a rash like
thing. It is pink, but when it starts out, is white or pale. Does your cat have that? Talk to your vet and see. Your cat may also have a different kind of rash. Talk to your local vet for more.

Still got a question? E-mail or IM me. Thanks!

It sounds like an allergic reaction to the fleas, but it's a possibility it's the food as well. Remember with flea collars they don't necessarily protect the whole body of the cat. The best treatment for fleas is using Frontline Plus, which also takes care of ticks. Even if he's always indoors you or other people can bring ticks into the house if they're on your clothing. Also remember that it can take months to completely get rid of all the fleas. When fleas lay their eggs they fall off the hosts (being your cat) body and onto the floor, in your furniture, and carpet. The egg becomes a larvae which feeds off the debris in your carpet, rugs, furniture, etc. The flea then develops into a pupae which can stay in a coccoon for up to 6 months. When it hatches it is now an adult flea and will jump onto and start biting it's host within minutes of hatching. Ask your vet about it and they will probably prescribe an antihistamine until the flea problem goes away. Hope this helps.

This happened to my cat also. I took him to the vet and they seemed to think it was an allergic reaction to something -- probably fleas, tho I wasn't aware he had any. He also became very sensitive to being touched in that area. The vet game me an antihistamine and a cone for him. Couldn't keep the cone on. I'm still not sure the antihistamines helped, but I now use a flea/tick med on him as a precautionary measure. After awhile, the condition seemed to pass on its own. His fur began to grow back and his sensitivity seems to be less now too. I wish I could help you. My poor guy went to the vet three times about this without, in my opinion, any real conclusions being drawn. I should add that he also has very dry skin. That could be a contributing factor. Good luck.

it could be the fleas and the flea collars .most of those are like toxic.when i had 3 for my 3cats they all were sick and jerky like being poisoned.it was the hartz brand .i tried others too 'and now i get advantax from my vets office,it could be the food also,i use friskies cat food wet and it;s good, but some canned food is made with ash' and oils and pulp and i wouldn;t use it for any pets... city rats would not even eat it,,get your cat to the vet as he might need some meds for his hair loss and rash..if you wait it could get lots worse ...good luck at the vets office today or tomorrow,,,,,,,

My friend just had the same problem with his cat. He took him to the vet and they gave him some spray...I think...and the hair grew back after a couple of months. It's just a skin rash/irritation, but it should be checked out by a vet.
