A while ago my boyfriend was arrested for an OUI, which is the same as a DUI. Anyways, the case was "continued without a finding". He has never been in trouble with the law before, not even a speeding ticket. He never does anything like this, and will clearly never again. He went to school to become a cop, and actually worked as one before as a reserve. Will he be able to get a job as an officer? or has this ruined his chances for good.

We tell our officers all the time at my department, that as long as they tell the truth on their interview and on their polygraph that their chances go up. It when they lie or "forget" to tell us, that we look down on that. I don't think that a DUI will keep him from becoming an officer, just make sure that he tells them the truth. It's good that he was a reserve. That makes the employer think that he is really serious about this. Just tell him to check out other agencies, don't keep it narrowed to one. He wants to have as many opportunities that he can! Trust me. He'll be okay. Tell him good luck.

It depends on how long ago the incident actually happened and the details. It also depends on the agency at which he applies.

My department may consider the applicant if the incident was at least 5-10 years ago. They do consider the entire background of the applicant but usually can understand an somewhat isolated minor misdemeanor crime that occurred several years ago if there are no other questionable issues in the background.

It depends on the department, a larger city with more resources to pull from may pass him up, a smaller force with less may not. Continued without a finding sounds like kinds guilty but we chose not to pursue, in that case his chances are better. Just be truthful and tell everything - don't let the prospective employer find out on his own.

Your boyfriend will need to inquire with local law enforcement in your area. I know of police officers who get DUI's here and are allowed to continue their employment. A lot of it depends on supply and demand. After he completes his certification (CLEET or similar in your area), then he may need to start with a smaller police force that doesn't pay as well. If he keeps his record clean for a good period of time this will help him prove to potential employers that he has learned his lesson and it was a one-time mistake.

As unlikely as it may seem, a DUI won't keep him from getting hired in many departments as it is not a felony. Don't look for them to look at it favorable though. It *could* cause him to be further down the eligibility list than some others or not get hired at all. Being as he has done police work, I don't think I have to tell him not to try to lie about it or exclude it from his resume'.

If this is just an isolated incident, I can't see any reason why he cannot be a police officer.
