Ive heard you can't lighten your hair with lemon juice with out the sun. What if I added a bit of peroxide to the water and lemon solution. My hair is on the dark side of a dirty blonde and I just would like to lighten it a bit. Anyone have a formula/ instruction? anything would help. I appreciate it!

Hi, I am a licensed Cosmetologist, and the lemon juice will not lighten your hair. It is acidic in nature and is usually used to make the hair shiny. Acidic elements cause the hair cuticle (the outer layer of hair) to tighten down on the hair shaft. Hence, making it appear smoother and shinier. But, it does not make the hair lighten.
In order for hair to change color, you have to use something that will cause the cuticle to raise up exposing the cortex (the part of the hair that contains color molecules) to whatever coloring you desire.
Hydrogen Peroxide will work over time. And it's harsh on your hair and you should be using a good daily conditioner along with a weekly deep conditioner during this process to make sure hair doesn't get to dried out.
Where your hair is on the darker side of blonde the problem with using hydrogen peroxide is that you could end up with some orange highlights. And there is no telling just how dark or light each area of the hair will get. So you could end up with some different colors in different areas. So just be consistent in applying the peroxide. If you want chunks, then you can take tin foil and wrap certain pieces up with the peroxide to isolate them from the rest of the hair and put heat to them, either by going in the sun with the foils in or using a blow dryer. This will give you chunks of lightened peices.
The best way, of course, is to go to a professional and have it done.
Good luck. And remember, if it doesn't turn out and you don't like it, it is cheaper to just go get it done the first time right than to have them fix it all later. Usually color correction is charged double the price to have it done right the first time. Just keep that in mind before you start.
Have Fun.

Use lemon juice and a blow dryer. It will however be only a very slight color change using lemon juice even if you are out in the sun. There used to be a product called "Sun-In". It could be used with the sun or a blow dryer. Look around and see if it is still sold. I believe it is. Wal Mart used to have it.

good luck

Please don't use peroxide,It will really dry out your hair. Unless your hair is light to begin with, the lemon juice will only bring out the red pigment in your hair. If it is blondish however, you can use a blowdryer. Its the heat that lightens it not the brightness from the sun.

Just put the lemon juice through your hair like you were wanting highlights, but it works best if you sit out in the sun after you put it in.

If you have never done this before it can be REALLY tricky, I would not add peroxide. Your best bet is to either see a stylist and pay to have it done or grab a box at the pharmacy and have a friend help you. That way you can choose the exact color you want and don't have to worry about frying your hair. .

Sun -in....it works without the sun, a hairdrier will make it work, or peroxide..plastic cap and the hairdrier will make it work too.
