If you are taking diuretics most are not potassium sparing (they make you pee out the potassium as well as the sodium). That means you can get low on vital potassium levels needed for nerve and brain functioning. You need to eat potassium-rich foods like bananas to counteract that.
Also more of an annoyance than a risk is that if you take them in the evening you will wake up wanting to pee and your sleep will be disturbed. Take them in the morning since you are awake during the day anyway.

Water pills are diuretics. Diuretics cause you to lose water through the kidneys by various mechanisms, many of which involve the loss of salts, like potassium or sodium. Salt imbalance can lead to problems with blood pressure, nervous system and heart rhythm. Also, losing too much water can lead to fainting and drops in blood pressure upon standing.

Water pills or diuretics are very dangerous if abused, they can screw up your electrolyte levels and stop your heart. You might remember Terry Shiavo her vegetative state was brough on by diuretic abuse.

You may deplete your body's potassium levels. You'll know if you do: you'll get a terrible headache, you will feel fatigued and lethargic. If you deplete your potassium you will have to go to the ER, because this is dangerous.
