Yes he does. Keep telling your parents he's just a friend and you'll be fine. A little dating would be good for you. Just don't go too far with him especially because there could be serious consequences if your parents found out. Parents are very nosey people.

He wouldn't invite you to go out to places if he thought you were a loser unless he likes to hang out with people he thinks are losers. Maybe you could take him up on his offer to do something in a group - that way it wouldn't be a date per se.
