I have recently moved, and I am now noticing my cat has a strange "sugary" smell. I can smell it on my clothes when I hold him or sometimes when he just walks by. He is very agitated with the move. I had a female cat, and noticed the exact same smell with her when I first got her, and it turned out she had tapeworm. Does the tapeworm cause the smell? I haven't seen any tapes from this cat, as I did with the female, or is this their normal "stress" smell from the move? It smells nothing at all like urine, just kind of sweet and sugary and unpleasant. Thanks :)

I'm with Crazy Cat Lady.....I don't think your cat has tapeworm...it's possible, but usually internal parasites don't cause an odor......."Sweet and sugary" is usually associated with diabetes, even in cats. It's possible your female had it too, and that the tapeworm just complicated it.....you should ask your vet to test for diabetes. Tell him about this smell...he may ask you questions about the cat's diet, exercise, or drinking (water) habits. Does your cat seem to be consuming large amounts of water and/or losing weight? If so, tell that to your vet also. I have moved multiple times with cats, and mine have never developed a "sweet" smell afterwards. It was probably preexisting in your cat, but the stress of the move aggravated the condition. At least CALL your vet and ask him/her over the phone about this. Diabetes in cats is manageable, as it is in people. Hope that helped

could be diabetes..If you have too much sugar in your system you spill out sugar...

why the thumbs down..cats can and do get diabeties and stress brings it out and you can smell sugar in the urin..in the old days vets and doctors use to taste urin to see if it was sugary...

the smell is not too bad, the taste is changed drastically. It is a clear sign that you have chosen the wrong Chinese restaurant.
