This is part 2 of my previous question. Some people seem to think the only way to support our soldiers and this war is to go fight in it. I was just wondering how important it is for you to have support at home.

God Bless our Troops!

When I came home from Vietnam, people were calling us baby killers and spiting at us. I have never gotten over it. There is no substitute for support from the American people!

Neeno brings up some valid points. I would like to add one more. Many seem to believe the military man is some sort of uneducated dummy who blindly follows orders and doesn't have sense enough to pour piss out of a boot. Since I know about fighter pilots, I will address that segment of the military. Every fighter pilot has at least a Bachelor's Degree. Every fighter pilot has passed rigorous mental tests. Every fighter pilot IS a fighter pilot because he had the intelligence and ambition required (a rather high requirement it is, too). Every fighter pilot goes through training that an uneducated dummy wouldn't begin to understand, never mind master. The machines they fly are among the most sophisticated aircraft in the world, not to mention most dangerous. And now to the ground personnel who keep these planes in service. They work with equipment often more advanced than anything in the private sector and do so with great speed and efficiency. They may not all be college graduates, but they are anything but uneducated dummies. Without them, there would be no need for the pilots. Bottom line is this: Military personnel are rational, intelligent people doing a job many civilians could not do. They are perfectly capable of understanding politics and the ramifications of political decisions. Anyone underestimating them is making a large error.

There are three view points that need to be discussed.

1) Those who support the cause, who understand the reason cannot be boiled down to one 'catch' word or phrase, and who support the troops.

2) Those who believe in the in narrow reasoning and conspiracies and cannot grasp the overall concepts, boil it all down to one word and claim failure, and would never support the soldier, call them 'killers' or 'sheep'.

3) Those who claim to support the troops but do not support the cause. If you cannot support the endeavor the the soldier is on, can you truly support the soldier himself?

There are definitely more ways to support the soldiers than joining the fight. I see USO volunteers at the airports who hand out cookies, sodas and Kleenex to crying spouses who just sent their soldier back to Iraq after R & R. Arent they supporting soldiers? How bout those faithful wives back here sending care packages weekly and live their life attached to the computer waiting for a log in? Or sleeping with their phone right beside their ear hoping for a phone call at 3am? Isnt that support? How bout those businesses that offer a 20% military discount because they believe in what they are doing? Isnt that support? How about those kids that ship girl scout cookies to troops? Or Boca Java that sends free coffee to deployed troops?

OMG there are SO many ways to support the troops other than joining. We can each do our part. I have NO intention of EVER joining, its just not for me, but I can do my part to support my husband with a flood of letters, care packages, and love. I can help the wives back here by helping take care of their little ones so they can have a break, or helping take care of paperwork issues for someone, or just being there to listen. Everyone can do their part to support troops, even if it seems small, it helps.

I will tell you that it makes my husbands job easier when he is deployed. He can focus on his job knowing that there are people here that are taking care of me and his children. Puts a smile on his face when he gets a random package out of the blue from someone. It lets him know that he is appreciated, and that his work is making a difference.

It is an incredible morale killer not to have support.
As a child, did you ever play in a sport that it was obvious you were the star of the team and your parents did not show up at any of your games? The feeling of not mattering to them would be overwhelming.
We as soldiers are partaking in a real world event, and the feeling of anger and malice from so many of our "family" makes it very hard to fight for freedom of those so deserving .

I think it is VERY inportant to support our troops. i have 4 people in the military. 3 of them are in the army-right now in Iraq, they are my brother and his 2 close friends. its my brothers 3rd time over there.and for his friends-its the 1dt time 4 both of them. then my cuzins friend is in the marines-he might be gettin sent out soon. but to show support for them all you can supplies 4 them cuz so many people have 4gotten about them-unless they have family members in it.

i also would like 2 join the military when i graduate (still kinda a while) but im gonna do it 4 my brother-cuz hes my world and my role model!

As important as being fed. Morale is 50% of the game, but the troops will fight even if no one believes in them, as long as they believe it themselves. Its called being a free thinker, something liberals know nothing about.
