I agree with Mary the nursing student. I have been getting these pains since I was a child. They are totally out of the blue, and when I was a kid I thought of them as "shooting pains." The first time it happened, the pain would go from shoulder to the tip of my middle finger on one hand. Strangely, the same pain in the same spot might "shoot" or "stab" several times over a few days, then nothing for months or a year or so, when it would "pick" a different spot. I've had them in my ribs, in my cheek, many places. The pain is severe enough that I react and maybe grab the spot, so people naturally ask what's wrong, but fortunately the pain is over almost as quickly as it arrives! I have always wondered if this is a neuralgia, but it's so rare that it happens that I haven't needed to follow up on it. The voodoo doll thing sounds like a great answer as far as what to tell people who ask why you flinched! :-)
