Well your puppy will tell you if it is too tired!! A mile is only 1600m so it shouldn't be too much.
Puppies need small amounts of exercise a lot throughout the day. It would be better to have a smaller walk say, 5 times a day or so. I love Maltese and shihtzu's!! ahh your very lucky to have one. take care

That's a pretty small pup! If they aren't used to walking that far, it might be too much initially. If they lie down during the walk, it's too much. Most dogs are pretty active and 1 mile isn't that far, but watch for signs from your dog - lying down, panting, etc. Be sure to bring some water for your dog, and a collapsable bowl if you are going to go further than 1 mile, or if you dog seems fatigued.

Yes! Treat your puppy like a young child. You would never take your young child on a long hike. Work the puppies muscles slow and by the time a year comes around you should be fine to go on long distant journeys.

That sounds like alot for such a little puppy... He is probably not old enough to do so much walking. Maybe wait a month or two... you dont won't to harm his bones and muscles or hinder growth. Good Luck with your little guy! 8)

At that age that is a bit too much for a puppy of that size. Your asking alot for such a young and small puppy.

shouldn't be if you start slowly and work the pup into it! think in terms of just starting an excercise routine!
my freinds walk their mini poodles for several miles a day, they just started w/small walks and worked their way into it!
just carry a water bowl and dish in case they need it!
have fun!

as long as he is still full of energy and doesn't overheat or start having breathing difficulties......... go for it!!! it will be one happy puppy......
sugestion: toy breeds are prone to something called collapsed trachea. If you are going to walk him that much, get him a harness and don't use a collar that will put strain in his neck/trachea area.
