7 Consider, for example, Israel’s high priest Eli. He was lax in disciplining his sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who officiated as priests at the tabernacle. Not content with the portion of a sacrifice assigned to them by God’s Law, they had an attendant demand raw meat from an offerer before the fat of the offering was made to smoke on the altar. Eli’s sons also had immoral intercourse with women serving at the entrance of the tabernacle. However, instead of ousting Hophni and Phinehas from office, Eli merely rebuked them mildly. (1 Samuel 2:12-29) No wonder “word from Jehovah had become rare in those days”! (1 Samuel 3:1) ................Eli knew the seriousness of the actions and should have upheld Jehovahs standards..............

Instead of disciplining them he let them do whatever they wanted. They ended up using their position to extract favors and money from the people they were suppose to be leading spiriutally.

--No mistake , he indeed was a weak puppy and indeed should have not been , with all he knew of God's morals, backing:

--His zeal for God and REAL love for his sons had no strength

(Proverbs 29:15) “15 The rod and reproof are what give wisdom; but a boy let on the loose will be causing his mother shame.”
17 Chastise your son and he will bring you rest and give much pleasure to your soul.....19 A servant will not let himself be corrected by mere words, for he understands but he is paying no heed.21 If one is pampering one’s servant from youth on, in his later life he will even become a thankless one."

--AND TO TOP all this note the outcome when people of authority are EASYGOING about evil trends of young people:

(Proverbs 1:31-33) “. . .. 32 For the renegading of the inexperienced ones is what will kill them, and the easygoingness of the stupid is what will destroy them. 33 As for the one listening to me, he will reside in security and be undisturbed from dread of calamity.””

--HAS THAT not happened in the shootings at schools etc. AS a teacher & coach of over 40 years , when I taught in the school systems, & when I did(and I did always--not perfectly) have to stop incidents or correct attitudes it indeed helped a volatile situation!

--THESE ATTITUDES of Eli and failure to take resolute action on his sons ATTITUDES was a major wrong SIMILARLY to what parents, teachers, principals or any who have reasonable authority over young ones fail to correct! THUS we have the terrible atrocities that children have been reported on as early a 2 years.

--A study made in 1976 of what was the cause of children from ages 2-8 of killing their younger bros. or sis by biting them to death, dropping them on their heads etc. in a city of Ohio--was found to because of the ungly head of JEALOSY!
--THIS indeed should have, could have and needed to be corrected as soon as any of that ugly trait showed up in ANY form!

He sent them to medical and law school respectively, but unfortunately didn't heed their hints that they were more interested in the hair and fashion industry.

Oy vey!

He knew his son was stealing money, fornicating, and other bad stuff. But did nothing to stop them.

Like David he was soft on his children, and figured holiness was 'genetic'.

He also ate too much.

He wasn't serious enough in correcting them, thus his leniency went un-appreciated and they did even worse things.
