My son has had a high fever (103-104 at night, 99-101 during the day) for 4 days now. I had taken him to the doctor yesterday and was told he had tonsillitis, since it was viral there was not much we could do but wait it out. His fever shows no sign of going away yet and he's so miserable (I'm giving him plenty of tylenol, he's drinking lots of fuids but refusing to eat) - anyways, how much longer would you wait until going to the doctor again? thanks!!!

I should add he's 4 years old, and they did do a strep test that came back negative.

I am so sorry your little one is not feeling good, I can only suggest is that you keep the fluids going (sounds like your doing good with that) and do the best you can to make him comfortable, and keep his temp under control. I don't know how old he is but if he is old enough then maybe try the baby Motrin to get his fever down. I have also heard of people alternating between the Motrin and the Tylenol around the clock , unfortunately There is really not much that your Dr. can do if it is viral. All the best, God Bless!

I'd give it another 3 days. Try alternating with the Tylenol and Motrin, that seems to bring a fever down quickly. My daughters get fevers like this when they get strep or at the beginning of a really bad cold. My Ped's doctor says Tylenol if they are miserable, but otherwise, let the fever do it's stuff of killing out what's causing the problem. Since you just went to the doctor yesterday, he's going to tell you the same thing again today. It usually takes a week or more for this fever thing to finally break. Lukewarm baths, plenty of liquids, popsicles, pudding, applesauce, Ice cream, those will keep him going. Also try soup. My daughter loves chicken noodle when her fever's up..just the broth though. Keep a written record of when you take his temp and what it is, so if or when you have to go back to the doctor you can show him specifically what's going on. I know it's hard to watch them suffer, but he will be fine. Especially since his fever is coming down during the daytime. I'm mom to 3 and been through this too many times to count.

I just had my 21 month old daughter at the doctor last week because she had a fever for 4 days. The Tylenol would bring it down, but then it would spike back up again - especially at night. The doctor said she had a bacterial infection. They gave her a shot of antibiotics in the doctor's office and then gave me a prescription for oral ones to continue for 10 days. Since your son is 4, can he tell you if his throat is sore? I'm assuming if he has tonsillitis, it would be, and maybe that's why he's not eating. I wouldn't wait more than 3 days with a fever before going back to the doctor. A fever is generally a sign of infection. I can't believe they didn't give him an antibiotic. If the pediatrician doesn't want to do anything more for him, take him to the ER.

I would give Ibuprophen (Motrin) instead of the Tylenol. My children's fevers never responded well to Tylenol. Also if the Mortin does not work well by itself, you can alternate between the two every three or four hours. I would go to the doctor again if it has been four days. Hope the Motrin makes him feel better. Also you may want to give him Pedialyte, or Gatorade to make sure that the fever does not dehydrate him. You could always call the pediatrician and see what the nurse says.

First of all I would try Motrin instead of Tylenol, it works a lot better. I would also wake him up 1/2 way through the night and give him a dose. If he is not eating try to give him pedyalite if your not already. Also try bland foods like toast & bananas. I would probably wait at least a couple more days to take him back to the Dr. because they probably won't do anything anyway. My son had high fever & diarrea for more than a week and it eventually went away by itself. I hope he feels better soon. It is very hard to watch your child feeling that way and not being able to do anything about it. Good Luck!

My daughter had seizures from high fever's and the very best medical method was Motrin 4hrs later Tylenol and keep it up so that he is getting something every 4 hours. if the fever does not break in 24 hours then yes take him back to the doctors.

The doctor should have given you instructions on when you should call back. They typically tell me to call if anything changes or if the fever or other symptoms aren't gone within so many days. I would give the doctor a call and ask how long to expect these things to last.

Hopefully they did a test for strep...

as long as he is drinking dont worry about the eating, keep up the tylenol as you said you are doing and you may want to alternate tylenol and mortin according to instructions for his age. keep a luke warm cloth on his head and light clothing.
I would wait one more night and take him back tomorrow morning if not better but keep a very close watch on the temp - thats pretty high. You didnt say how old he was but if he is pretty young they can handle that kind of fever. Best of Luck!

I would wait till about 48 hours after my last visit. But if his temp gets to be 104 at night I would take him to the hospital.
Sometimes high fevers can cause brain damage in infants.
