My father in-law just retired and his kids had a surprise party with all his co-workers and roasted him. They had everybody get up and tell funny stories about him it was pretty fun. They had pictures and memorbila from his job hanging on the walls.

As to the comment below about people being sensitive about retirement I agree.( I would never make fun of someone's age ) I'm talking about getting up and telling all those "Remember the time" stories. Not making fun but, remembering the fun:)

If you are going to do the roast, please be careful. Although some people can take it, retirement is very hard on others. Some people feel depressed come retirement time, they feel useless and close to death, so jokes about how old he is or how he won't be useful anymore are horrible. The first respondent had the best idea, in my opinion. Throw your husband a party illustrating how the world is his oyster.

Choose an appropriate theme...such as golfing or beaches (whatever applies to him) and base your party around that. Hire a band (if you can) and have an open bar. The whole funny story/roast idea is nice too and will make it an especially enjoyable night. Also, be sure to take plenty of pictures for a "Best Wishes Album".
