My son is a Junior in High School. He used to get good grades in 9th and 10th grades. This school year he lost his motivation to get good grades. I say to him how important it is to get good grades, to get admission in colleges. How do I motivate him to do well in school?.

Has he lost interest in school completely or just a few classes? Has he lost motivation to do other things he used to enjoy? The grades slipping might be a symptom of a bigger problem. I'd talk to him...not lecture him....to see why HE thinks his grades are slipping. Is he bored in the classes and not trying? Is he in more advanced classes than he should be in? The motivation to do well has to come from him...he has to want to succeed. You can help him by talking to him. Kids live in the moment and it's hard for them to be motivated by something that is going to happen in 2-3 years (getting into a good college) so that's not going to motivate him. He needs rewards now, and the reward can be as simple as you praising him. Talk to him, everyday, to see what's going on in school, and ask him how he did on that test or quiz he had today/yesterday or that paper he turned in. Don't make it seem like you're nagging or being nosy but that you want to know because you're proud of him and are enthusiastic about his daily activities.

I think action speak louder than words. Children don't pay attention to us these days they learn by trial and error.

Take your child out to a city that is less fortunate and ride around and explore. Talk to your child about choices and what what one he/she wants to make.

Point out that we make good choices in life and bad ones. And a good educations is the start of making good choices. Take your child to a homeless shelter, so he can have a image of how choices in life make such a impact on what we become and where we will go. Then make the point that mommy and daddy cant live forever to help them out always they will one day have to stand on their own.

Talk with him. Discuss his hopes and aspirations. Ask him what is that one thing he will love to live or die for. Thereafter connect his ambitions with the need for good education. If the prize is good he will try his heart and soul. Do not lecture. Ask questions.
