On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
Click Defragment.

It's easy. Click on START (bottom left-hand corner), PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, DISC DEFRAGMENTER. Choose what you want to 'defrag' and off you go. This can sometimes take a long time, so let the computer get on with it, and don't fiddle with anything. Good Luck.

When you do defrag do it overnight as it can take ages and it's best to not use your pc while it's defragging.

Please be aware that Win XP uses (mostly) a NTFS partition. This is far superior to the old FAT16 and FAT32 partitions of Win98 etc.. One of the advantages of the NTFS partition is that is less prone to fragmenting data than the old 32 bit tables so running the defragment utility is less of an issue...

Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Disk Defragmenter

If its a laptop, you should keep it plugged in to charge becuase if you lose power when its transferring data, it could get lost.

Depending on the size of yur hard drive it could take an hour or two - best thing is to leave it running and not use it.

if you go to the start button on the bottom left hand corner and click for the menu, go into "all Programs" then there's an option called "accessories". this will show another option called "system tools". put your mouse over this option and "defragment" will appear. move your pointer over it and click and there you go!
