Smoking, drinking, junk food - yes all bad when taken to excess. We should know all our limitations. It seems ridiculous to ban junk food ads on UK tv just so kids don't see it but that won't stop it. In a world of political correctness it makes you wonder where it will all end. Sleeping will be bad for you next.

No, it shouldn't be banned, but it shouldn't be as cheap. Therefore, why doesn't the government slap a massive tax on it like tobacco and alcohol already has?
At least that way people who insist on living on it will be able to say that they are at least socially minded as they have contributed so much to the exchequer.
Certain groups, such as ASH and certain government ministers will bleat that smokers in particular are a burden to the welfare state. This of course is nonsense as they ahve contributed vastly more per capita than 'normal' taxpayers, many of whom may eat very poorly or drink too much.
In addition to the tax, those who smoke die much younger, as we are so often told, freeing up services for the elderly and not claiming a pension or other benefits to a ripe old age.
I am unsure what the government proposes to do once all the smokers have given up. It will have to turn somewhere and it will be towards us.
And no, I am no longer a smoker, but nor am I one of those rabid reformed smokers, either. Do the maths. Smokers and drinkers contribute vast sums towards any side effects their lifestyle may cause. Therefore, let's tax burgers, chips, sugary drinks and refined carbohydrates in general. They will be less appealing - and accessible - if more expensive and therefore many will eat less of them.
Sounds good to me.

If someone chooses to eat junk food, they are affecting themselves.. if someone smokes around others, they are affecting everyone that the smoke reaches. Smoking is being banned because second hand smoke is "proven" to cause cancer. Junk food doesn't.. or atleast hasn't been proven to. lol People control what they eat, people can't control where the smoke from their cigarettes go. Junk food will never be banned, although commercial franchises like McDonalds and Wendy's are now offering lighter choices on their menus to appeal to people that wouldn't normally dine at their restaurants.

I'm not entirely sure which side you're coming from here but 5 to 1 the same as me.
Sad times we live in that you need to ask the question. We are being conditioned by a bunch of po faced nannies who wouldn't know what a good time was if it jumped up & bit 'em, and most people are wringing their hands & falling for it for fear of being seen to be out of step!
Just living is bad for you! Best to do all the things you mention (& some you don't) but in moderation most of the time.

There is no ban on junk food because it does not affect other people. Where as passive smoking does, and alcohol affects peoples moods.

If it weren't for people being so damned irresponsible, we wouldn't have this problem. Too bad we're so sue-crazy here and common sense has gone out the window. Only in America can a woman get coffee from McDonald's, spill it on herself, and successfully sue McDonald's because SHE was too f**king stupid to be careful with her coffee. If things keep going this way, chips and fries will be the least of our worries. Freedom and liberty will be next.

Yes, and why not ban oxygen in polluted areas too, thats also bad for you.
(no one ever seems to mention the stinking mass of carbon monoxide we breathe in the air from cars, but I do, after all it is thousands of times more harmful than the odd cigarette smoker, but the car being so convenient most do not register this glaring pollutant!!!)
Then we could pay VAT on oxygen cans for our compulsory gas masks.
Good thinking eh Gordon

The reason I agree 100% with banning smoking in public places is because of second hand smoke. My friend's dad got lung cancer because of passive smoking.
Junk food doesn't effect the people standing around you, but smoking does. Simple fact. Why can't some people see this logic? If people want to smoke themselves into an early grave then they can go ahead and do so but they shouldn't be allowed to take innocent people with them

There is nothing wrong with the occasional smoke or drink. In the same way there is nothing wrong with the occasional bag of chips.
