He will need to keep trying different meds and will need to learn how to live with chronic severe pain. Spinal Stenosis can be operated on, however, spinal surgery can actually cause more pain for some people. I've had chronic severe pain for 17yrs, I've had two neck surgeries, and plenty of physical therapy, traction therapy, chiropractic help. I currently take Methadone, it has been sent by God, I swear it helps more than anything I have ever taken. Ask your doc if you are a candidate for this, I can actually breath normal now, and my pain level is at a point that I can enjoy life better, just existing in pain all the time is depressing, I wanted to live my life, so I thought I would do anything to get out of pain, and I had tried everything, legal and not. I know about crying cuz the pain is so bad, and the whole situation causes you to get depressed, I take an antidepressent as well, and it has also helped me with my physical pain. Try contacting a pain management doctor, don't give up, but don't give in either. Good luck.

he could seek the doctors opinion of a contraption to wear that will administer pain to the nerves causing it. he will have minor surgery to place the electrodes to the area underneath the skin.
my sister had this done after hand surgery...it helped.
not sure if this is something that can work on the stenosis, but it's worth asking!
another thing to do is seek out a chiropractor, they seem to be able to help in some with stenosis or better yet, renting a tense unit to deliver slight shocking sensations that will relax the nerves responsible.
last but not least, if your fiancee hasnt had a mylogram, it might be in order as there are other reasons for back pain that sometimes don't show up in other testing.
i would never tell a patient to take pain medications unless the pain is only temporary! most are addicting and some can cause issues with the heart as well as inducing depression.
good luck!

Poor man.
I have had sciatic pain too. The pain caused terrific tension and that led to more pain and more tension.
Find a really sympathetic energy-healer or therapist, such as shiatsu or other energy treatments. They seem to be more on the ball than orthodox professionals in my experience.
My yoga teacher gave me some massages up at the base of my skull which seemed to relieve pain of this kind further down my back.
I also found out, most people have one leg fractionally longer than the other, and this can lead to pressure at the point where spine and pelvis meet (sacral and lumbar areas). You can find if this is so by standing on one leg and swinging the other back and forth....easily see which is longer.
Put a small leather pad inside the shoe of your shorter leg, to even up the leg lengths, and help that pivotal point in the back to get back into balance.
All these tiny things can help.
I found painkillers had to be very strong when things were very bad, but in the end I believe it was stress which helped to cause all this, so dealing with the stress helped the pain.
Louise Hay in 'You Can Heal Your Life' has interesting things to say about back pain, including how our bodies express our psychic or emotional stress for us.
Good luck. It can get better.

i feel sorry for him. no one knows the intensity of the pain unless they've had it. from 93 to'04 i had tried everything from:
anti-inflammatory meds, disc decompression, p.t,
ms contin, lidocaine patches, spinal/epideral blocks. finally in spring of '04, pain dr finally said it was time to see neurosurgeon. like alot of people i have heard both good and bad stories. when you are in that much pain, you are willing to do anything to make it go away. i had foraminal stenosis, spondylothesis, arthritis and 2 herniated dics. if someone would have said to fly to mars to get rid of pain, i would have done it. fortunately i was referred to a great surgeon. if you live in texas, seek out dr.kraus. if you're in ohio, kettering medical center and dr. jamal taha. they did my surgery before dr.kraus left to head up a neurosurgery in texas. they proceedure is called a lamenectomy. it fuses the affectd area. from where i was then to now is like night and day. i had to be fused from L 3,4,and 5 from the stenosis. they also fused s 1 from the spondolythesis. and removed the 2 herniated disks. of course there is no cure for arthritis. but i feel that if i did not have the surgery, i would have gone crazy from the pain. try the back pain forum at www.backpainforum.com
good luck and i hope that he can find relief to get backto sleeping at night. if he has any questions. e-mail me

Pain meds work differently for different people. He needs to keep trying different ones at different doses until he find something that works.
I feel for your fiancée and I know how he feels!! I used to cry in my sleep and I have ground my teeth down literally to the gum line for the pain was so intense at times.

i was going to advice to drink plenty of water and it will just go away but then i read the full details and its just not a simple backpain so i dont think my advice will work...
i see that youve already been to the doctor because you already know the diagnosis.. if the meds are'nt working, he may just have to go on an operation... they can fix that.. he may have lost the spinal fluid thats why it hurts badly but i think they can replace or put something on the spine to help reduce the friction that causes the pain...
