It's all in the shape and the spacing of the pieces of metal that make up the rack. It's made to not absorb appreciable energy at the wavelength the oven works at.

The metal you see in microwaves will not resonate heat from microwave signals, like most metal will. It is different.

its the metal thickness
thin aluminium foil will catch fire quickly
but throw in a light bulb or a fork and it wont burn
