Here is what I did with my son... I just took off the diapers and put him in underwear. The first day, be there all day... put him on the potty every half hour. Don't ask if he has to go, just put him on the potty, Help him point downward into the potty. (Mom CAN do this... I'm a mom, I did it.) Reward him with stickers or whatever motivates him when he goes... make a BIG deal of it. We used chocolate chips because they are small, measureable and a treat because they're usually in cookies.

If he went a few times on the first day, the second day increase the timing to 1 hour. Prepare for a hard day... the second day with my son was a day from hades becauase we'd removed the only thing he still had control over. But keep at it. It's hard work but it will all work out.

Third day, same as second... if he's responding, increase the intervals between potty visits.

Fourth day, start asking if he has to go potty. Increase the rewards... maybe let him pick out a video to watch but be sure to go potty in the middle.

Fifth day, continue like the fourth. On our fifth day, I finally left the house to visit a nearby hobby shop that has a play area. He played, I shopped. At about an hour, he came to me walking like a cowboy (legs spread apart) and was saying "Uh oh..." We went to the potty and I figured we'd have a wet issue... but he'd only done a few drops and had stopped himself. Yippee!

Just keep at it, be consistent. The week will be very hard, but it will be worth it. Good luck!

Our son is 3.5 and NOTHING worked. He was doing really good about 6 months ago then he got pretty sick when we were in the process of training & reverted back to diapers. So we were back to the drawing board and he wanted no part of the whole potty thing.
He got lazy and would not wear underpants at all. So now the only thing that seems to work is bribary. Not candy or toys or anything like that but fun stuff. We were allready planning on going to West Edmonton Mall for Easter (waterslides, roller coasters all that good stuff), so we told him only big boys can go on all the things he wants to do. He's a daredevil & loves the trains, waterslides & roller coasters but hates the little baby ones. It's been about a week now & he has been doing really good again with the real underpants.
It's a trial & error thing so find what ever your child responds to & go with it!!

yup, you'll have to. you're not the only person that can teach him, but you are his best role-model. there have been a lot of questions on potty-training here, and a lot of great ideas in them too. try browsing!

some of those i find interesting are: putting cheerios on the toilet as targets; placing food color or any coloring on the toilet so that everytime the kids pees, the water's color changes! the idea is to make it fun or interesting for him.

take note though -- when i asked my husband to show our son (now 11yo) how peeing was done, we made sure that the little one didn't actually see the big one's (you know what) but just the path of the pee towards the toilet. Adult (you know whats) are strange and even scary for young boys, they don't need to see them yet, i think. A willing older kid (sibling, cousin, friend) can also do the demonstration effectively.

i'll never understand why your wife let it go this long does she not even try??? he'll be starting school next year and he's not potty traind? not even pee in the potty? let him go to the bathroom with you so he see's how it's done. sit him on the potty evry 1/2 hour. make a BIG deal out of it if he goes reward him with something to keep him modivated (sorry but bribing works when it comes to things like this) Constantly talk about how big boys go in the potty let him know that he'll never be able to go to school and do the things that other kids do if he doesn't use the potty. make him feel like a big boy. ENCOURAGE ENCOURAGE ENCOURAGE! make sure your wife helps with this process and when he does go in the potty i mean make a BIG DEAL out of it. BEst of luck and God bless you

Actually i am trying to potty train my own 2 1/2 year old son he will be 3 in august i already bought him a stool, portable potty, stickers, undies, and pull ups. I am so prepared as i thought but i guess i was wrong because he won't go. ughhhh! Well i am trying the reward him as he goes trick. Whenever he goes pee-pee or poopy i give him one of his favorite stickers like for example cars or spiderman. lol. and As far as you showing him i think it's great that way he learns to go pee-pee like daddy! my son always goes with my husband to see him go pee-pee and after that he imitates him! so i say try it! It may be weird but maybe it will help him!
Well good luck and i will tell you if this technique works!

The best thing is to let him watch you do it. Since he's four he should be tall enough to use the big toilet. ! game is to put cheerios in the toilet and try to pee on them. Four is pretty old. Once you start trying to potty train him I would praise him for all the times he uses the toilet and not punish him for not using it at least for two weeks.

we bribed with M&M's and lots of praise! Removed diapers completly. My son liked to go outside at his special place when swimming. Don't worry, no neighbors could see! Don't know about the cheerios in thetoilet, what a visual! My son probably would have tried to eat them! He also would have thrown his own idea of a good target into the toilet! Made me laugh though!

This little trick worked for my two boys, Try putting a few Cheerios in the toilet...they love to AIM for them and like going often because they think it's a game...took three days to totally be diaper free during the day...then We let them pick out their first pair of underpants told them they didn't want to pee on the character they had picked out IE: spider man, scooby doo ect...work great for us!

Make a chart. Take him to the toilet every half hour. Every single half hour. And keep asking him if he has to go potty. Everytime he makes in the toilet, give him a gold star on his chart.
