Aerobic kinds of exercise, such as brisk walks, burn fat. Anything that gets your heart pumping faster and for like 20 to 30 minutes. Do you really think you'll do situps for 30 minutes? I doubt it. Go for a walk, bicycle, swim or otherwise do stuff that takes 30 minutes.

Don't listen to the other answers here. Many people here are giving you bad advice, whether they intend to or not. Situps probably won't hurt, but if you're trying to lose weight it's not really the way to go about it. Many people believe that you can spot-reduce, but this is impossible. Situps will not help you burn fat off your abs any more than it will help you burn fat off your legs, back or face. Your body burns fat off of parts of your entire body whenever you do any exercise. That burn you feel when you do situps is from your ab muscle, fat has nothing to do with it. Weight loss is a lot more complicated than most make it out to be.

Situps will burn some calories but not many. It's an anaerobic exercise that will strengthen your ab muscles, which is a good thing in and of itself, but not the most efficient way to burn calories by any means. You need to burn 3500 calories more than you take in to burn a pound of fat. There are three ways you can go about this: 1.) you can restrict the calories in your diet 2.) you can increase the exercise you do 3.) you can do a combination of the two. I would recommend either 2 or 3.

Cardio is highly recommended for weight loss. Walking, jogging, running, swimming and jumping rope are all excellent. Look on the internet to find out exactly how quickly they'll burn calories. In any case, you should aim to lose 1 pound a week through exercise or diet, losing weight faster than that over the long-term is potentially unhealthy. Also, I'd recommend taking a multivitamin.

Finally, you might want to consider strength training at the gym at least once a week either by using machines or freeweights. Women shouldn't worry, lifting weights will not make you look like those disgusting women in bodybuilding magazines. Women don't have the hormones to bulk up that way. The women in those magazines use steroids. Stay away from steroids and you won't have to worry about that. Strength training will burn calories, increase bone density and increase your metabolic rate.

Finally, be sure to get plenty of rest. Getting 8+ hours of sleep every night is just as important for weight loss as anything else I've outlined.

I hope my advice has helped you. You might want to consider consulting with a nutritionist and a personal trainer. They'll help you lose weight much better than anybody on yahoo answers will.

Sit-ups will not help you loose much fat, any exercise is better than no exercises, but when it comes to fat burning and weight loss sit-ups are way down on the totum pole. to answer your second questionk, no they will not bulk the area up unless you use weight resisted sit-ups if you just do sit-ups with your natural bodyweight you will just increase strength and definition in the muscles. The best way to lose weight is cardio because it burns more fat than anything else, whether its biking, running, walking on a treadmill, or playing basketball or soccer, any activity that you can do for 30 minutes straight will increase your weight loss 100 times more than sit-ups. Hope this helps and good luck!!!

Sit-ups tone the abdominal muscles. Sit-ups are not necessarily going to melt off the pounds.
To define your abs, do hundreds of sit-ups.
To add bulk to your ab muscles, do less sit-ups with resistance (like a weight).
Either way, fat is gonna hide your muscles.
If you want to lose weight, you want to do a variety of exercises so that your body doesn't get used to doing the same exercise.
Doing any exercise longer than 20 minutes will burn fat.
There are about 3,500 calories in 1 pound of fat.
You can lose up to 2 pounds per week healthily.

If your only goal is loosing weight, situps are of little use.
To loose weight, you want to burn calories. Plain and simple. And the best way to burn calories is through cardiovascular exercise. Get your heart rate up, and keep it up for extended periods of time.

If you're looking to target the waist line, sit ups combined with cardio exercise would be beneficial.
There is a fine line between enough sit ups, and too many which will bulk you up.

Doing Sit-ups will burn calories (which is what burns fat) but it is considered an anaerobic exercise, as opposed to aerobic exercises such as jogging, cycling, or swimming. Aerobic exercises are preferred methods to burn fat. Anaerobic exercises, like your sit-ups, are muscular strength/endurance training methods to develop your muscles. If you are trying to burn fat in your abdominal region, you'll have to engage in aerobic activity, defined as elevating your heart rate to 70-80% of your maximum heart rate and sustaining it for 20-40 minutes. You won't necessarily see your fat loss in your abdominal region first, as people shed body fat in different places. Eventually, you will lose the fat here, but there is no method to "spot reduce" in any particular area (common myth).

Concurrently, your sit-ups will develop your abdominal muscles so that once the fat is gone, you will be left with a tight tummy and not just loose skin. Depending on how well your nutrition plan is (very, very critical), you may even see that coveted 6-pack!

No...they won't bulk you up
they also wont help you lose weight...just add muscle under the fat if thats what the problem is
What you want to do is look into a proper diet and doing cardio exercises/proper weight training

situps and exercise will help burn calories but situps are for toning your abs not the answer for a weight problem, focus on toning problem areas and eating right and you will lose excess pounds or go to drphil.com

You need more cardio than just sit-ups.

You could do 5000 sit-ups and see little results. It's a great way to lose weight, but try cardio. Go to the gym and work on some ab machines.

Sit ups are good, but just a very small part of trying to lose weight.
