They are getting rarer - though most real pool halls (as opposed to bars with pool tables in them) will still have at least one or two billiards tables.
The main reason is that it requires more skill than most people have (even those who are really good at 9 ball, etc.) About the only people I see playing it are old, but if you watch - some of them are incredible shooters, and would wipe the mat with you in just about any game.
I shoot a lot of straight pool, preferably on a 9' table (which are getting rarer too).

To the commenter that thinks billiards is boring, it is boring if you have no clue about what is happening. But, to see shots that you have attempted and failed to pull off be made by a player, it is pretty amazing.
BTW, I haven't played billiards for a few months. Billiards tables are larger (10 foot). So, it takes away space from the other tables. Heck, I went to a pool hall in Chicago that had a 12 foot snooker table that no one played because it was too hard. I enjoyed a table I couldn't easily reach across (I am 6'7").

seriously?
Around here you can't throw a rock with out hitting a pool hall. Most bars have a pool table...have leagues and prize money.
