Oh it's not just American. Here in Australia we've got plenty of them. Some really bad ones, too. I remember seeing "Trust God without terms" on a church down the street the other day.

I've only been to three other countries: Mexico, Canada, and England, and I have never seen one of those signs there. But you're right about it being an American thing. I can count about four of those signs just in my neighborhood.

I think it's more of an American thing in general. The signs are inexpensive and commonly accepted. Note the strong difference in signage between urban and rural areas in general, and especially between old cities in Europe and newer, smaller cities in the U.S.

I remember a few years ago here in denver there was a big stink because one of those signs on a major city thoroughfare said something like "The jews killed jesus"
