the absolutely best place is to look in local magazines / papers. we have the friday ad where I live and people are always selling really decent next to new furniture cheaply. my mum furnished an entire house for hardly anything and it looks really good
alternatively and better still, sign up to your local freecyclehttp://www.freecycle.org/
you'd be amazed at what rich people give away - sofas, tellys, loads of furniture and even the occasional washing machine / dishwasher, provided you can pick it up
Good luck!

If I were you I would keep the shopping local, the shipping charges are gonna kill you on this stuff if you buy from the internet. Check the papers every week for garage sales and estate sales. You can find some really nice stuff at these really cheap. I furnished my first house with garage sale stuff and no one knew it but me. Most places have consignment shops and second hand stores too, they have some nice accessories for your home. Good luck!

for washers and cookers and appliances I'd say try
second hand shops
for other things like lamps, especially good for curtains and bed spreads, small table and things like that id try Ike
theres Argos for things like plates, lamps, glasses, cups, bins, and other big pieces of furniture like kitchen tables (there's one I'm planing to buy in there with four chairs and a table. look out for the starter sets as well.
and this sounds silly but try looking in tescos, and asda as they have some really cheap home ware products in there.
also i know everyone says it all the time but i got almost all our furniture from eBay and it's still okay our last sofa was from there and it was fine.
you could try mfi for the bedroom stuff as well.
carpets try looking out for the ready cut carpets and they are often a lot cheaper.
also try free cycle ,gumtree.com, and newspapers like the ad mag.
good luck x

Definitely Goodwill--or as those of us loyal shoppers like to call it: G.W.I. Sounds fancier. I dont know about New England, but in Florida, the Goodwills get surplus items from Target stores and sell them for cheaper in Goodwill. My whole house looks like it is furnished from Target. Hee Hee. My little secret. Also, yard sales as well as local shopper newspapers-especially for appliances. Good luck and happy housewarming!

I don't splash out on expensive items either so I go to Ikea and Argos. If you go on eBay, there's lots of cheap but good quality stuff there too, I got a swan neck kitchen tap brand new on eBay for £13, it costs over £100 from a DIY store!! Look out for stuff in Lidl too, they have special offers on certain household products each week but they go very quickly!

i dont know what it is called, but there are stores where there are new things such as freezers/fridges that got scratched while they were being shipped. They are like 300 dollars off. They turn out to be less than 100 dollars-e everything!! it is a great choice.
