It is really a matter of what you like and how much effort you are prepared to put into it- and of course as someone else said the dogs personality is really important too.
I prefer short (smooth coated) dogs as they don't require as much ( or in reality any) grooming. You wont have to worry about a short hair developing knots in its fur or worse still dreadlocks!
The second point though is a big consideration for those who have their dogs spend time in the house or in the car- MOULTING.
Long hair is obviously longer and therefore more of it and particularly if its one of those fluffy dogs the hair tends to blow around catch on everything and is a pain to get rid of.
I had friends with long haired dogs when I was a kid and used to think they were wonderful until the dogs moulted and you couldn't go near my friends place without getting dog hair all over you!
PS watch out for the temperament of some of those little furballs - here in Aus the Maltese is the most dumped dog of all because they look cute but have nasty bitey temperaments!

I prefer smooth hair dogs because the longer the coat more skin problems are likely to be present

nicely there is endless mixes attainable in the industry, there is not any way that we are waiting to nicely known that the canines would be besides the shown fact that as amazing as an grownup because of the fact it replaced into as quickly as a canines. I least complicated sense a pair of canines breeds have the comparable cuteness ingredient whilst they are adults too. those are: Rat terriers, and Cocker Spaniels. between the golden retriever and lab mixes besides the shown fact that look the comparable as domestic canines whilst they are grownup, must be in basic terms now no longer as fluffy. seems do no longer subject. no longer fairly. do you comprehend a classic poodle is ranked in the intense ten maximum smart canines breeds? Who might have ever concept! Rotweilers/ dobermans are up there too! i've got had a pair of rat terriers that weren't as amazing as they have been as puppies...yet I nevertheless enjoyed them. the single I gained precise now must be installation an grownup and that i'm afraid she's lost the cuteness ingredient yet she besides the shown fact it is an ok finding canines. Cocker spaniels have the equivalent lovable face as they do as domestic canines and adults! we've one and he or she is gorgeous mutually as an grownup.

I prefer fluffy hair. But you must consider how much time you have to spend combing and grooming. I have a lot of time, so it's fine with me.

I prefer a thinner coat as opposed to a thicker one. Less maintenance.
You should ask yourself if you have the extra time to maintain the dogs coat before deciding on a breed.
Good Luck!

Smooth... Nicer cleaner coat, easy to take care of, no matts, no excessive grooming.. A nice wipe down with a damp cloth, and a quick brush and you are good to go.
