My 11 year old daughter suffers from painful menstrual cramps. This is the second time she has had to come home from school because of them. The doctor said that heavy menstruation is normal in younger girls, especially when they are in their first year. However, ibuprofen did not work last time, so I gave her two low dose aspirin. It helped with her cramping immediately.

I know Reye's Syndrome is a real danger to children, but how often does aspirin need to be administered before this occurs? I couldn't find any answers on the Internet - it just says children and aspirin don't mix.

I hate to see my child in pain, and I have tried everything else, from heating pads to teas, hydration, hot showers, ibuprofen and acetimetaphine.

Why don't you try giving her Midol? Then you wouldn't have to worry about the aspirin thing. I had the same problems when I was younger. Midol helped the most.

I've been told by some that aspirin is OK as long as the kid isn't sick or with a fever. My son was allergic to ibuprofen, or motrin, the doc said aspirin was OK for antiinflammatory problems, as long as he wasn't sick. Have you ever tried naproxen OTC? That's a little different than motrin. Also, motrin usually works if given in high enough dose I know the label says one, then try another. Most people try more than that. But, a doc should be able to help you figure out the safest way The antiinflammatorys are hard on the stomach,
aspirin included. good luck, have 2 girls, my oldest called me at work when she had cramps, 2nd period or so, she didnt' know how to get the cap off the 'child proof bottle'. Poor thing, old enough for periods, but not old enough for child proof bottles proficiency!

This is a statement on the site regarding Reyes: Aspirin - not causative but use of aspirin to treat viral infection seems to increase the risk of Reye's syndrome
