First, you probably need medication. There are a variety of meds available, talk to your doctor. The other things are just general good tips: exercise, social interaction, immersion in things you enjoy, sufficient rest, and healthy foods. If you are seriously depressed, you will be emotionally unable to do these things until you get some medication, usually something with a serotonin receptor impact. Good luck.

You can't beat professional help, but there are many anti-depression techniques
1. If you have Seasonal Affective Disorder, it could be a lack of light that causes the depression. Light Therapy helps with depression
2. Identify the source of the depression and resolve it
3. Constitutional Hydrotherapy
4. Crystal Therapy
5. Massage
6. Drink lots of water, and take nice walks outside (this also helps with SAD)
7. Echinacea, Ginseng, and St. John's Wort are mood brighteners

set goals for yourself, I find when I achieve it for a while afterwords I'm very happy... then it's time for another goal. But getting up the motivation to start is very, very hard. Begin with small things.
Exercise, this is really really good. Just jogging for a mile helps.
Read a book or watch TV right up until your about to fall to sleep, that way your brain won't have free time to dwell on negative things. But be sure to get enough sleep.
Or if your doctor prescribes pill, I wouldn't recommend that though, cause it doesn't make you feel quite right. You won't think too good, you'll do thing's that later you'll think are stupid and that will make you more depressed <-- personal experience.

The best way to handle depression is counselling of that person by a councillor, which is done best by that person's closest relative, coz only his closest person knows the reasons for his depression and can try to solve the problems which are the cause of depression.

Depression is fast becoming a common problem for many in this fast changing world with pressures acting on a person from all directions, be it studies, work atmosphere, competition, family problems, children, losing someone near and special (even a pet), etc. First speak about your problem to the people most close to you who can understand, perhaps your parents, brother, sister, etc. or even your close friend. Get to see a psychiatrist. A professional psychiatrist would analyse you and guide you thro. Initially, he will try to calm you down with antidepressants. Then he act as your counsellor. Just follow him. He knows his job.

try keeping busy and also going to see a mental health professional they can prescribe a really good anti depressant medication. Also if you can afford it see if there is a psychologist you can see for private or group psychotherapy. Some clinics have a sliding scale rate, it depends on how much you get in income that determines how much you pay for the services.

Make up my mind to stay happy. Every morning say to urself "i am responsible in making my day good or bad".
Keep yourself very busy in the early hours of your day. Even if you dont have work try doing your favorite pasttime (puzzles, crosswords, movies). But do it with some motto to finish. Dont start browsing in a haphazard way. Try to browse with a defined concept in mind. If puzzles or crosswords or some other activity is ur fav past time try to finish it. Basically keep you mind involved in useful activities.
Have a lot of coffee. You need it i bet u.
Set a short term goal for your life with respect to career or studies and focus on it.
Stay smiling. Its the toughest thing to do. But just do it.
