Dachshunds are whip-smart, but independent and easily distracted by their noses. They were bred to work vermin on their own -- not necessarily on direction from a handler.

So they tend to "listen" to themselves more than you!

The good news is, they are very keen on positive/motivation based training. So treats always get their attention.

Definitely invest in classes from a good training facility, or your local obedience club. It's worth it!

They aren’t what I’d call “easy” like a sporting breed, but I don’t think I’d say hard either, and definitely not hardest. The can be stubborn little dogs, are extremely clever, and often won’t do something unless they see a good reason for it. With patience though, it is more than possible to have a well-trained doxie.

All dogs have their own training challenges. I think one reason that Dachshunds can be tough (as with all small breeds) is that owners tend to baby them and let them get away with some things because they are do cute. The dogs quickly figure out that the owner is a pushover. It's hard to train a dog who thinks you aren't serious! Attend a training class that uses positive reinforcement, have patience, set rules and stick to them, and you shouldn't have many problems.
