I got a kitten yesterday for my daughter and after getting it home, I dicovered that the poor little thing was infested with fleas! I went and bought some shampoo from the store that said it was for kittens but on the back it said do not use on kittens under 8 months old.....he is only 3 1/2 months old....is this just a precaution or can I use this stuff? I also bought a 4in1 collar, that said it was safe on cats 3 months or older. Is it good to shampoo him and then put the collar? or is that too much chemicals for my poor little kitten? Please help!

Go to your vet and get a tube of Advantage or Frontline for kitttens. You will apply this to the base of her neck, and it takes effect immediately. One application lasts a month.

I also had this problem when I got my kitten. He is 9 months old now and flea free. You may want to put cedar chips in your kitten's bed.

Another thing that I did was I made a spray of 1 cup water, 3 tbsp lavender, and 1 tbsp fresh mint and sprayed the carpet and let dry. After only a couple of uses there were no more fleas in the house at all. With this spray mix I also moistened a small towel and added a bit of rubbing alcohol (helps with the itching), and instead of bathing the cat I just rubbed him down. He didnt mind this because he felt like he was just being petted or something.

Also, it helps to know that the life cycle of a flea is only about 4 weeks. So the more you vacuum the less chance your pet has to get fleas. Also any place where he may rest such as table tops and things, make sure to wipe those down. Those little specks you find are eggs so you do not want them staying in your house.

After keeping up with this I saw a dramatic result in only a few days. Hopefully this helps you to.

BTW... I did not use any collars or anything. Also make sure to keep the litter box clean - fleas can hide there to.

Give your kitten a bath with half the recommended amount. Don't pour it directly on him, disolve it in warm water first. use your inside wrist as a guide for temp so you don't burn him. You may need to bathe kitty a couple of times. I found that an old toothbrush works great, especially for the face because you don't want to dunk the poor things head. DO NOT GET ANY IN THE EARS! If you need to clean the ears, (a nice hiding place for fleas) use a cotton ball, NOT Q-TIPS and wrap it around a finger (pinkie would probably fit best) and use a little witch hazel (antiseptic) and gently rub inside kitties ears. I also recommend either the Frontline or Advantage for your kitten but only put it on after you're done with all baths and even then, wait 2-3 days after the last bath to put it on. Ask your vet for any other tips that might help your kitten. I'd avoid a flea collar as they're usually too strong for a baby's skin. I hope some of this helps! GOOD LUCK!!

Do the Advantage asap, lots of fleas can kill a small kitten. Advantage is safe and your vet will give you the correct dose.

Take the collar, cut it into pieces and stick one in your vacuum bag. It will help kill ones you suck up. They're pretty useless on cats, just makes them hang out elsewhere on the cat.

Flea baths only work for the ones on your cat that moment, and even then they'll all move to his head between his eyes where you can't use it.

Don't waste time. Every hour spent using products that don't work is more and more fleas and eggs you'll have to deal with later.

Best thing in the world is Frontline or Program. It is just drops that you put at the back of their neck. You don't have to bathe the kitty. You can buy it at your local vet. It is safe to use on Kitten from 8 weeks onwards and it last for 6 weeks. Works like a bomb. Dont use flea powder as it only clogs up the pores of the kitten.

No you shouldn't use flea shampoo or collars on kittens. If you really want to treat him, Revolution (Selamectin) can be used on kittens from 6 weeks of age and each spot on lasts for a month it also prevents earmites, and some mange mites. Advantage and frontline can be used from 8 weeks. Advocate which also prevents some worms can be used from 9 weeks. They can tend to be pricey but they can be found cheaply if you look around online or ebay, pet produce stores etc. You should also give this little one a wormer and make sure it will cover flea tapeworm.

DISCUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE FLEAS!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I had to get that out... but what you can do is take warm water and dissovle the shampoo a bit in the water and dip the baby in there for a couple minutes. Drain, scrub her, and rinse throughly.

that should help alot. and put the collar on. I dont think they work but i hate fleas so much I would rub celery on my Dobermans if it worked..

When I took my doberman to the vet that said that they "did" put the flea medicine on him....

They lied.

I found out like a month later when I was petting my doberman and i scratched his back, I found flea poop, and fleas all over him!!!! and he had hott spots on his feet frm the bacteria in the fleas, it was gross he had two warm sticky spots about hte size of a dime, that had a clear goo on it, ( the goo was bacteria!!!!) and i freaked out and bought the good heavy duty flea killer, and gave him 2 hot baths.

And it worked. Also you should buy those little tubey things that you squeeze on and it works for a month. Use K9 atvantx, or advantage for kittens, and go by its weight.

Hi there

Horrid things aren't they, the best way to get rid of them is to go to a vet and but some flea treatment, I think there are three the vet will offer you now just ask their advice on which one is best for your kitten. It doesn't take long for the flea treatment to work, I've never had much luck with shampoo's and powders.

Call and ask a vet. They will not charge for a consuatation call like this. Also there is a wonderful flea, tick etc medicine you can get for your cat called REVOLUTION. You put this on the back of their neck once a month and it comes in a 6 month supply. I have looked at several different brands of things like this but for the cat, Revolution is overall the best for what all it will do for kitty! Good luck!

colors smell so bad that it is hard for the kitten to breath. don't use those on any animal if you can help it.

my daughter had one about that age and shampooed it and he is 6 years and fiesty.

you may want to call your pet stores to see which brand they would recommend.

Also do not use regular shampoo that are made for humans because the cat will lick its fur and I am told our shampoo has residue that is nocuous to an animal. cat more than dogs.

besides you need to be taking that cat in to make sure it does not have feline lukemia. A disease that is contageous to other cats and can cause death if not treated in time.

That is definitely way too many chemicals for your kitten. They put those warnings on there for a reason not for a precaution. Talk to your vet, they may have advantage (which kills all fleas, their eggs and even kills anything in your carpet) for kitties her age. Have fun with your new kitten!
