Take some ibuprofen if you can tolerate it, or some tylenol. Put a heating pad, or ideally a heated buckwheat or rice pillow (fill a sock with rice, tie a knot, place in microwave for 30 seconds or so, not too hot) on the area for 15 minutes or so. Get in the very warm shower and gently move the neck from side to side, front to back. Massage the area with some lotion. It will take time, but it should loosen up, more quickly if you use the above techniques.

My mother-in-law, is a massage therapist, and she pushed where my crick hurt the most, about 4hours later, my neck felt so much better, and then she like massaged around it, it was pretty darn nice, and its basically a technique that everyone could do.

I had an awful one several years ago, and it just wouldn't go away. I tried OTC painkillers, muscle relaxers, massage, stretching, etc. I ended up going to a chiropractor and after the first visit I was able to turn my head again (much to my relief!). After several visits, the pain was gone. Many health insurance plans now offer reimbursement or partial payment to chiropractors, also.
