I have a friend who has heart palpitations or it might be ventricular fibrillation. She's had this problem, whatever it is, since she was born.

She's having surgery today and I just wanted to know, how dangerous is the surgery for this.

if it helps at all, she is 16 and pretty small, like 5'1".

Thank you so much for all the answers.
Apparently heart surgery is sometimes very dangerous and unfortunately she did not make it.

I don't know what else to say, but thanks for your help.

Man, I'm really sorry to hear about your friend. Unfortunately, any kind of surgery is an invasive procedure, and always carries a degree of risk due to infection, bleeding, etc. despite anyone's best efforts

Strength and grace to you

It depends on her strength, the skill of the doctors, and how long the surgery lasts.

The longer the surgery (think: over 8 hours) the more risk involved.

However, because she's young and tiny, she will probably be just fine. As long as she told the doctors all of her allergies to medicines and what medicines she is taking, she will be fine. In this day and age heart surgery is common.

Also, she is going to be in considerable pain/discomfort after the surgery. Try brining her some flowers and a teddy bear after she gets out of the ICU?

If your girlfriend is having open heart surgery there is an inherent risk with major surgery, but usually no more than any other major surgery.
If she is having an invasive procedure for correction of electrical circuit in the heart for arrhythmia then there is certain risk, but a very short recovery period.
Her age and height have no effect on the surgery or procedure.
I wish you both well.

It is really not too dangerous. I worked for a group of 40 cardiologists. We did surgeries on the heart every day with few major comlications. Problems can happen because any surgery is dangerous, but with how far our technology has come, it is very safe!

Don't let them scare you! I am a registered nurse, and have had heart surgery several times. The surgery I had to correct heart palpitations was not bad, went home the same day, as it is a laser procedure and I was awake the whole time (drugged, but awake). Good luck & don't worry!

all surgery carried risks... and during heart surgery they actually stop your heart to do the repair and have a machine breath for you.. clotting is the next dangerous part after surgery.. usually all goes ok... not to often do things go wrong.. she is probably very strong except for this problem.. stay close and try not to worry

any surgery is dangerous, but i would think this could be even more so. my grandfather had triple bypass surgry and was pronouced dead for 2 whole minutes. but that was like 25 years ago. hopefully they're better at this stuff by now

It depends on what she is having done. I had a friend that had a fast heart rate. They went through her groin and did surgery on her heart. She went home THAT NIGHT>
