Can I get in first with:

"No, irony isn't mentioned in the Bible at all, so of course we are allowed to understand it. Love and Blessings!"

;o)

Damn! I DIDN'T get in first! Curses!

I don't think it's specifically mentioned however many Christians are trained to be literalists thus accepting everything at face value. That tends to get in the way of understanding the concept of irony.

btw, sarcasm is a form of irony and need not be addressed separately.

Or fable, myth, metaphor, allegory, pious fiction.

I've read the Bible cover to cover dozens of times, but I can't find the commandment that says "Behold, thou shalt not use thy brain for ought but to hold thine ears apart."

Still, it must be in there somewhere or so many folks wouldn't be obeying it with all their might.

I would point out that Mark's Gospel actually uses the literary technique or ironic reversal regarding the Messianic secret. So at least Mark understood it as a writing technique, even if it was lost on his audience. Actually the added on verses following 16:8, not part of the oldest manuscripts, completely destroy the ironic reversal, indicating whoever did the later redactionss had no concept of irony either.

It is ironic that sarcasm is not mentioned that I know of. And therefore the understanding of irony and sarcasm is not needed. Isn't that ironic? Not to be sarcastic though about that irony.

Well, after Ed's blog about irony, I'm not sure that I'm real clear on it, truth be told. ;o)

But sarcasm I understand pretty well, in person. Sometimes it's hard to discern in questions.

My guess is this is a _slightly_ sarcastic question? (note my sarcasm in stressing the word, "slightly.")

;o)

It must be somewhere between "In the Beginning..." and "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen."
