are there any side effects to the numbing medication the dentist uses??

Hi there.. dont worry about it, injected anasthetic is used in small amounts and wont harm you.

Its much more harmful to your body to have decayed teeth

Are you speaking of the topical anesthestic they rub on or the local one that is injected?? ANY medication, regardless of how it is taken can cause side effects!! They usually use some form of novacaine, lidocaine, etc. With injections, it could cause nerve damage, etc, although I would think this would be rare.

some can cause your blood pressure to rise, but they shouldn't have long term side effects
