All surgeries carry some risk. Laser surgery is no riskier than most, and the benefits far outweigh the minor risks.

I had laser eye surgery and it went extremely well. There is always a risk, as with any surgery, but it's highly unlikely that you'll have a negative result.
To the person who posted about her husband who said ophtho's don't get laser surgery--I say nonsense. I worked at a medical university for over 9 years, and MANY, MANY of the ophthos had had the procedure done. The MD who performed my surgery had had it done, as a matter of fact.
I think it's great.

My ex-hubby is a researcher in a Dept of Ophthamology and I asked him about having laser surgery on my eyes (I wear contacts). His reply was this - "I know loads of eye surgeons who wear glasses (i.e. they would need some form of laser surgery to correct any defects) but not one of them would have it done on their own eyes". There you are - if they wouldn't have it done - why would you? Needless to say I declined having it done. I notice also that several clinics offer to do both eyes at the same time - something else my ex said - never have both eyes done together - if something goes wrong - you're blind. Get one done - if ok then consider the other!

Drs have to look objectively at risk - weigh up the chance of it making someones sight worse against the impact that it would have on their life if it made it better. If someone is going to loose their sight anyway then it's probably worth the risk. It's something to think about though - you should take drs advice but do your own research too and weigh up the risks for yourself. xx

It's worse for spiders, they have eight eyes and laser surgery costs them a fortune.
