My first child was moved to a mattress on the floor (safer than toddler bed at her age) when she was 16 months. This was strictly because she HATED her crib so much. She would cry and cry. When she switched to the mattress, she was calm and slept better (we put a gate on her bedroom door for additional safety).

Our second child is just now moving out of her crib at 1 month shy of 3 years old. She had no problems with the crib, never tried to climb out. Her older sister got a new bed, and she wanted a big girl bed too, so we bought her one.

It is truly an individual kid thing.

I think the biggest mistake people make is rush out and get a bed for their child when they climb out of a crib. I highly recommend getting a crib tent to keep them in the crib instead. If you put them in a bed, it only makes it easier for them to climb out.

My children were all three when I moved them into a regular bed. By that age they were old enough to reason with and understand that they had to stay in their beds. Also- I don't recommend getting a toddler bed, its a waste of money - its the same size as a crib mattress so they outgrow it quick. Just invest in a twin bed.

My son was about 2 and a half, my daugher was a not quite 2 yet. My kids are pretty short for their age, so I got them both car beds with take the crib sized mattresses. My son is almost 4 now and my daughter is 3 and they still have a lot of room in the bed. But then again, they always have been on the small side.

My son moved into a bed when he was 20 months, only because that's when my daughter was born and we didn't want to buy another crib if we didn't have to. We worried it was too soon but he transitioned just fine.

My daughter moved to a bed at 25 months because we moved and I didn't want to put the crib together again just to take it down a short while later. She did just fine as well, although I may have kept them in the crib longer had the circumstances been different.

We took the main side of the crib down when she was 2......left it off for half a year, then transitioned to toddler bed.

We had a crib that converted into a toddler bed. When our son was about 1-1/2, he started to be able to climb out.
This we discovered one night around 1am.
, huh?....
, wha?

Oh ****....

So we turned it into a toddler bed that day. We left three of the sides up, but we took down the front so he can get into it easily. Eventually, he outgrew it and when he turned 2-1/2, we got him a regular twin sized bed.

We moved my daughter to a twin bed with bedrails, of course, at age 2. I was expecting at the time and wanted plenty of time for her to transition before the new baby needed the crib. The transition was a cinch.
Beware of the escape artist. You may find your child sleeping on the floor for a while. The new found independence allows for many unforseen mishaps...for example, unplugging the night light, climbing on the dresser, etc.
Best of luck to you.

My daughter is 19 months and she is still in her crib. She never tries to climb out. I am about to take the front rail off, drop her bed to the lowest level and by one of those little half rails to keep her from rolling off. She is very independent and so I think she would really like it if she was able to wake up and get out of bed herself. We will probably do that in the next couple of weeks. Hope I helped.
