what does 'one stick of margarine' mean?

Hi, I'm looking at a recipe for oatmeal cookies, which says one stick of margarine.. how much would that be, any idea...

In the US, unlike most of the rest of the world, they serve margarine shaped into sticks in a package. So one pound of Margarine, would cut into four separate sticks. They are usually separated by wax paper or wrapped in wax paper.

So one stick is 1/4th of a pound in weight. 1/2 cup equals one stick. But weight is good enough, for only in the US, do they use these cup sizes. Cups in other countries actually have different measurements.

For most of the world, it should be noted that 1/4 a pound is 0.11 kilos.

Just use a stick of butter. Sounds like someone was trying to change the recipe to use margarine instead of butter. Margarine doesn't come in sticks. Butter does. I guess if you wanted to use margarine you could measure out 8 tablespoons from the tub.

Yum!! You've inspired me. I am going to make some oatmeal/raisin cookies, too. A stick of margarine = 1/2 cup. You can use real butter too. I am sure to let my butter/margarine soften up before I start mixing ingredients. Good luck!!
