Here is my explanation: Liberalism is derived from the identical root as liberty, synonymous with freedom; thus, liberals are more likely to be free thinkers or introspective, less encumbered by fears of dogma, so might potentially arrive freely at a nontheist conclusion regarding religion and the concept of god. There probably are indeed more atheists who are liberals than are conservatives politically, although surely they can not all be so labeled inclusively since generalizations are never true!

Labels comes from imature people who are prejudice against other cultures, other beleifs , or other ways of living. I am constantly labeled immature my older sister because i do not follow the same religious beliefs she does, oh and i am also labeled by her middle child syndrome, and stubborn when the only thing is that I am just being me and have the freedom to do so. I would to label her crazy psycho witch lady but i am much more mature then that so i will just think it!

In American political discussion liberal and conservative no longer mean anything. They've just become slurs to attack your opposition. Don't like what someone else is saying, "You liberals/conservatives are ." Or worse still all you idiots with your "repukelicans," "lieberals," "demoncrats," etc.
Therefore, the hardcore rightwing, being most often hardcore Christian, will hate nontheists and "liberals" so use the two interchangeably.

People overgeneralize. Most of us don't fit cleanly and neatly into little pigeonholes. On some issues I would be considered liberal, on others, conservative. It's a person's right to make up their own mind about what they believe on each individual topic. Sticking to a "party line" is for the dull.

Yeah my ma is a vaguely christian neocon and she always likes to call me a pinko commie and hanoi courtney and tell me that if I let satan out of my life I wont be so against rush limbaugh- seriously we have had this convo like 15 times. I think it has to do with the amount of fanatic christians who are conservative- they just naturally assume that christians or even religious people at all could not be liberal

I imagine the reason is because a fairly large majority of atheists/humanists have a liberal mindset. While a large majority of Christians are usually quite conservative.

A cross between wishful thinking and ignorance. People who haven't the intellect to form a real argument often throw around labels and other ad hominems instead.

well the same reason that all republicians are viewed as conservative or religious..or bible thumpers..or the religious right..
it is merely a label...
But sometimes the parties don't speak for the people..
sure there are alot of religious liberal..sure there are alot of religious democrats...BUT the party doesn't allow their voices to be heard..
the democrats in general don't allow religious people to speak at the national conventions..
