What factors do you consider?

First consider the context - Are you buying it for yourself, as a gift, for dinner, for a cocktail party. If it is for a gift consider what the other person likes. If it is for a meal think about what you are serving and pairing it.

Consider the grape - Red or white, bold, dry , light fruity

Consider the producer - wine rating, reputation, local

Consider price - under 10 11- 20 21-100 over 100, Good wine does not have to be expensive, but great wines often are.

Experience - if you have found a wine you like you might continue to buy it, buy a case.

Exploration - if you are inteested in a new variety, new area, new name, etc.

I am from the wine country, Cape Town South Africa and was a waitress and studied Catering for two years. So I do know how to choose a bottle of wine.

I am not sucking this information out of my thumb.

Red wine goes with red meat
White dry wine goes with fish
Rose with pork dishes although also good with an Ostrich Steak.
White Sweet wine goes with any Poultry dish.
All wine goes with cheese
All pasta goes with either a sweet white wine or a dry white wine excluding pasta dishes with red meat for example bolonaise.

Im not a wine drinker myself but here and there I will get a bottle of wine by curiosity. I get headaches with a couple of wine cups so I tend to get the sweetest wines. There is this one called Lambrusco that is very soft and wow it tastes awesome with just about any food.

Experience, varietal, and after that what rating it got from either the Wine Enthusiast or the Wine Spectator. Generally you can't go wrong if the wine has a 90 or higher rating.

I chose by use, who will be drinking it with me and of course price or value. If I am having it with food I try to match the type to the food, I might buy a great Cabernet or Bordeaux to have with a good steak but a nice red blend to have with burgers on the grill. They both would be fun and tasty.

...well that depends... if "Harold" has any left from the night before or Sammy still have some in his bottle... sometimes I just wait till the clerk isn't lookn and I choose the closest to the door... hate those corks...ain't nutt'n like a good ol'cold bear and Doritos's... or a good M.D. 20-20...usually after a Jewish wedding that's lots of left overs in the trash cans...but Manochewitz is so sweet... like drinking that stuff the kids drink, sangria...yuck !

The price, I like to find a bargain.The ones that I have found that makes me happy are found at Dollar tree stores.I enjoy Cabernet's & Merlots.After all aren't they all just sour grapes??Why buy a nmae and make someone rich?Good question....
