Beyond rare cases, DI's do not beat up the recruits. On occasion, you may feel like they are going to, but they don't do it. Basic has changed over the years. When it comes to recruits fighting other recruits, I personally never saw this happen. We were too busy to think about fighting each other. Now, this doesn't count training (like hand to hand combat). You train with other recruits, and yes it can hurt occasionally, but I wouldn't call it fighting.

20 second showers, that sounds about right. But that isn't all the time, remember, it is part of training. You are learning to do everything fast and with a strong sense of urgency. Basic is designed to be as stressful as possible. This stress forces you to adapt to an environment that is as close to combat as possible. You learn to do things that you never thought you could do.

Some people call the training abuse, personally I disagree.

Whoa, I thought this board was for one, maybe two questions at a time. Guess I was wrong.

To answer, Recruits do "fight" others in both close order combat with pugill(sp?) sticks and in training exercises using blanks or in this day and time maybe lasers like laser tag.

We had 5 minutes to shower and 5 minutes to shave and do our business.

I don't think the DIs are allowed to touch you anymore so they can't "beat you up" but they can scream at your platoon and make you feel like you've been beat down mentally.

It's all part of making you a better man and be able to take as well as give. You are better for it.

Brutality in basic training is in the eyes of the beholder, what you call brutality I would call training. Of course recruits fight each other, how else would they learn to fight. 20 second showers are 20 seconds longer then they will have while in country.

Brutal is a subjective term. What Paris Hiton considers brutal is probably not what a Navy Seal considers brutal.

Boot Camp/Recruit training is not mindless. It is however very scientific in its "brutality" in order to get the lessons accross making soldiers who will accomplish the mission and save lives in combat.

There was in 1971. Senior drill instructor came into the barracks about 2am, drunk, and knocked a guy out of his upper bunk right in front of me. He then started kicking him until he rolled under the lower bunk. SDI then started flinging a number of recruits out of their bunks kicking and swearing at them. Someone turned on the lights and he just stood there spewing obscenities and then he left. Charges were made against him and one other drill instructor backed us up. Nothing happened to the senior, but the DI was replaced and we saw him driving an officer around. He was busted to e-4.
Senior Drill Instructor marched us out into a field and challenged anyone to a fist fight. The guy was tough and a boxer so no one took him up on it. He was better behaved and even personable the rest of basic. A lot of us slept with our entrenching tool after that incident.

Well I think you are referring to about 30 years ago where the DI's could actually assault you and hit you with the butt of a rifle etc. That is no longer allowed. Its mainly all intimidation and making everything have a sense of urgency, constantly putting you down etc. This is in the first few weeks, as you "earn" more respect you get longer showers, more time to eat, and less yelling. Then on graduation day you understand what it was all for.

Stop watching so much TV and BS movies. No. You don't get to take an hour long shower, but they are fast. The rest of the stuff is crap. Who's telling you stuff like this anyway?

Boot camp can be considered brutal, but thousands of requits in all of the services survive it every year.

Occasionly somthing might get out of hand but in general boot camp is an excellent learning experience and I have never heard anyone say that they were sorry that they went through it.

No and besides, if it takes a good swift kick in the a** to straighten up a recruit, you toughen up. Than kick in the a** might save your life one day and the lives of some fellow comrades -in-arms!!
