I am afraid you are going to have to do a repair by booting with you original XP disc. You should not in theory lose your work but it can happen. I have said in many replies to similar questions the first rule of computing is backup regularly. If you manage to save everything, buy a USB hard drive, they are reasonably priced and plug and play. Always keep a backup of your important files wether it's music or college work. A hard drive can die at any time or Windows become corrupted. If you have a back up you're safe. Good Luck

I know this is not a good answer but a setup unfortunately means you will lose ALL your files on HDD. My friend had the same problem and now he learnt his lesson and keeps backup CDs for his important files. I know this does not help a lot but you will have an idea of how to proceed.
Good luck

The files that are on your HD are prob still in tact. You should get your hands on a Windows XP disc to run a repair on your Windows. If you cant get your hands on one, but need to recover your files. I would recommend running Knoppix which is another Operating System , but can run off the CD so you dont have to install it on your HD. Once you get into KNOPPIX you will be able to see all of your files from XP and save them to a CD/DVD. You can download Knoppix here : http://www.knoppix.net/get.php

Repairing from the XP disk will just deal with the system files, your own data should be unaffected.

The original XP disk replaces all the system files, your stuff gets left alone.

If you dont want to take the risk of losing your files, take your hard drive to another computer with a hard drive already in it with a os and plug it up, go into the os on the other hard drive and get the files off your hard drive...

When does this happen? Try to start your laptop in safe mode, if that doesnt work then last best known configuration... if that doesnt work then you will have to do a system restore... Just be careful to restore just windows not everything on your laptop....
All the best....
