Yes and one that has the overhangs on it so the bit ch can't lie on the puppies. Too many puppies are killed when inexperienced bitches roll over and lie on top of them. You should also not leave her alone more than a few moments during the first week of infant life.

Things you'll need to Deliver the Puppies. Like the Boy Scouts Motto says - "Be Prepared"or else you could be in trouble.

Weeks ahead, begin saving newspapers.
You're going to use a lot of paper.

You'll need 2 forceps to clamp the cord.

A sharp scissors to cut the cord.

A postal scale and basket to weigh the puppies.

A good supply of clean wash cloths or old cloths torn into 12x12" squares for holding the slippery puppies with.

2 hot water bottles or a heating pad

cardboard box or clothes basket lined with soft towels to put the pups into as needed. This is where you'll put the hot water bottles or the heating pad turned on LOW and covered with a couple of towels.
You have to be careful not to overheat the puppies.

A rectal thermometer to take the *****'s temperature with and some vaseline.

A wall thermometer to make sure the room is warm enough for new-borns (it should be about 80 - 85 degrees F)

A small wash basin, hand soap and towel

A small amount of disinfectant to soak your forceps and scissors in, between puppies in the basin.

Warm water to wash the *****'s rear end after the delivery is over.

Some method of heating the whelping box or the area, that won't overheat the dam or puppies.

It is the best way and makes it easier for you to control the pups and the mother, and keep them warm. Its also a lot easier to clean three of four times a day! Is it an absolute necessity, no, you can use a very strong thick walled cardboard box, but believe me when she starts whelping pups, it will get soaked and be completely ruined to the point of being useless.

no you don't i get a great big box times 2 and cut them down to size and glue them together i go to comet and get large boxes and glue 2 together and then cut them down to the size i wont 6 foot one way and around 4 foot the other and cut them down so that the ***** can get in and out of the one end as she wants to and the sides are about 18in high and put it in the corner of the room for her i get a few old clean candlewick bed spreads and lay them in the bottom of the box with a large piece of polotyhene on the floor and then let her have the pups in there and when its all over i put her nice and clean with a nice warm clean bed Ive never lost a pup yet and i never go two bed i stay down with the pups and keep a close eye on them until they are at least 14days old I'm afraid that is what you have to do if you want to breed then you have to give up a lot of your time to help the ***** with her young pups pop along to the charity shop and pick up some candlewick bedspread if you dont have any and put them in the machine and wash them before you use them its so important to keep both mother and her pups clean at all times

my dog has had two litters of pups, what i did with her, was let her have them where she wanted within reason, then i made her a lovely bed, and blocked out part of my living room, so it was big enough for her to leave the pups if she needed a break, i never had a whelping box, but i did have a happy content dog, with happy healthy pups!

yes its the best thing for her, she will feel comfortable in there, and will know that it is a safe place to have her pups, bitches also like to get the "nest" ready, so either get her a whelping box, or somewhere that will be hers to have her litter

That is best but you can make one with a heating pad on low heat ,a box turned up on it's side and a king size sheet trown over it for privacy. The Mom will like Privacy.Put an old quilt or something comfy in the bottom for her to lay on that does not ravel easy. She may dig and dig during labor.Make sure the babies stay warm while mom is in labor!!!Good Luck!!!Watch for greenish black liquid ozzing from mom as that is a sign pups are in distress!Good Luck!!!

When my ***** had her first set of puppies we didnt have a welping box, she was happy. She gave birth behind the sofa (gross by the way) and they carried her pups one by one to her basket and just layed beside them so they could feed, we just kept checking on her and they were all fine and she was a first timer and coped just fine without the need for equipment, the more natural the animal is and the more comftable it is the better........its not so daunghting and the natural instinct will just take over

Yes. Otherwise your dog will make her own place for having her puppies. She will be nesting. It is best for you to choose her nesting place so that she doesn't gather dirty laundry behind the couch & have her puppies there

Introduce her to her box which has some material in it that makes her feel at home.

There needs to be an edge to the opening of the box so that the puppies can't crawl out.

I would advise it. You can buy disposable ones for the internet which are made of waterproof, tough cardboard. I have used these for both my cavvie's litters. Make sure though you get the rods which slot in the sides to stop the mummy lying on her pups and squashing them. They are around £35, depending on the size. I bought medium from www.whelping-boxes.co.uk
